Another Gambling Scandal? The Apprentice 2 Finalists May Be Revealed!by Mike DeGeorge -- 09/30/2004
View Printable version of this article Does everyone remember the spoilers during Survivor: Pearl Islands when it was revealed by an online betting company that they had received a large number of wagers from the Vancouver area? People put two and two together, since contestant Sandra Diaz-Twine is from the area, they assumed that she would be the eventual winner. They were right. How about the season before that, on Survivor: The Amazon, when the final two of Jenna and Matt were correctly predicted in a similar online gambling scandal? It's happening again, but on a different Mark Burnett produced show. Offshore bookie BestWWTS.com has suspended betting on the winner of the second season of NBC's The Apprentice 2 because of an "unusual betting pattern on two contestants." The maximum bet of $300 was placed on two candidates by a number of accounts, according to BestWWTS.com wagering director Stuart Doyle in an interview with the Associated Press on Tuesday. Doyle said that a large number of $300 bets in one area is very suspicious, as the normal bet is around $25. The odd thing about the scandal this time is that the online accounts making the wagers are based in the New Hampshire area. None of the current Apprentice 2 candidates are known to be from that area, however, that does not rule out friends and family, so it could be anyone. The bets were placed on Apex Corporation's Jennifer Massey, an attorney from San Francisco, and Mosaic's Kelly Perdew, a software executive from Carlsbad. "We don't know if this is some kind of link to the contestants or some way involved with the production," Doyle said. "When this has happened before, it's because someone has known the outcome." NBC refused to speculate on the story, noting that there will not be a winner until the live finale. Before the suspension of betting, Elizabeth Jarosz was the favorite at 5:1, surprising since she tanked her recent role as Project Manager so badly. Mosaic's lone female, Pamela Day, was next with 7:1 odds, also surprising as her run has been less than remarkable. In third was John Willenborg at 8:1, again, surprising because he has not been featured on the show at all. It will be interesting to see if anything comes from this information. Last season, we were flooded with rumors that Kristi Frank would make the finals, and that proved to be false. One thing is for sure, Apprentice 2 viewers will be keeping a close eye on Kelly and Jennifer M. for the rest of the season!
