Road Rules X-treme, Episode 12: It's Angela's Party, and She'll Cry If She Wants To

by Kara Wild -- 08/25/04
Angela is not happy. She's not happy about Jillian being the center of attention. She's not happy about the experience she's having on the show. She's not happy with her teammates. In other words, Angela isn't happy about anything. She even tries to throw the challenge so that she will be voted off. Does it work? Find out inside!

Dear Kina: I'm sorry I ever compared you to Angela. Yes, you annoyed me from time to time, and yes, you sometimes had a holier-than-thou attitude, but at least you were positive and you worked hard and you loved the challenges and you wanted to be there. All of which is more than I could say for your replacement.

Last week on Road Rules: Horny, personality-free Jillian arrived to take the place of Ibis. And the world was a sadder -- or, in Angela's case, angrier -- place.

This week's episode starts where the last one left off. Still in bed, Jillian gazes longingly at Patrick after doing the deed, passing home plate, or whatever you wish to call it. She voice-overs that that Patrick is passionate and romantic and she has a "really strong connection with him." Bet his girlfriend felt that way, too. Outside, the other Roadies, sans Derrick (who is asleep next to Pillian... ew!), gripe about their situation. They admit that Jillian is cool, but they are less than comfortable with her lack of inhibition. Angela snits that there's no way she's going to sleep in a different area just because Jillian "wants to be a floozy."

The next day, Angela has an awkward conversation with Jillian. Jillian tells her that she doesn't feel like she's new, whereas Angela tells her that she still feels that way, and had just started to fit in maybe a day before Jillian arrived. Jillian tells Angela that she's just here to win the missions, "and if there's a hot guy, so be it, I'll take him." Angela is pissed that she "finally has a friendship with everybody, but now this little sexpot comes into play who wants all the attention," while Jillian drawls that she doesn't know how to be a friend to Angela.

At a rather pricey-looking lunch, Angela pisses off to Nick some more about Jillian. Why is it that Angela strikes me as someone who thrives on being negative? Like, if Jillian hadn't come along, she would be kvetching about something else? She claims that everything is sex to Jillian, and when the conversation isn't about sex or guys, she doesn't know how to communicate. Nick gently tries to tell her that Jillian has other qualities, like that she's down to earth, and Angela just needs to see that. Angela won't have any of it.

That night, the Roadies receive a clue to meet at the Pan Americano hotel 1 PM the next day wearing swimsuits and tennis shoes. Derrick boasts that the team is "sky-high" right now, and they are going to keep winning missions. Normally I would see that as a troubling sign that they will be voting someone off, but the Angela-Jillian redemption arc is far stronger in this episode, and it can't be completed if Angela has to go home.

The Roadies arrive at the hotel on schedule, and soon an unhappy Angela begins to vent. She wants to go home, back to where she had her own life, her own house, her own car, her own job, and her own cereal with the fruity frosted hearts. She tells the other Roadies that "I know it sounds selfish, but I hope we lose the mission." Angela leans against her chair in this jaded, faux glam position, while Jodi looks at her dumbfounded and Nick shakes his head. Undoubtedly thinking: "We lost Kina for you??" If they aren't, they are the most generous people alive.

Inside the hotel fitness/spa area, the MMs lead the Roadies over to a table with six empty containers, each with a Roadie's name on it. Their objective is to fill the containers with their sweat over the course of an hour, collecting enough to fill a full cup. Eww. But better than eating cow eyes with lashes.

The Roadies get to work -- running in place, punching, riding the machines. Angela, meanwhile, sits off to the side, noticeably idle. She doesn't care if they win, so she isn't putting in the effort. The other Roadies are too busy to tell her to shove it. They soon discover that they aren't getting the sweat they need, and switch strategies -- the guys will sweat, the girls will scrape.
