Renovate My Family, Episode 3: Meet the Rosiers - Part Two

by Donna Reynolds -- 09/16/2004
Last week we met the Rosier family of Lemont, Illinois, and watched as their "adventure" began. But, unlike the Biggins, this family has some real problems and, undaunted, Jay McGraw is trying to help them. In part two of their saga, we will learn Gary's medical condition and watch as the family deals with yet another crisis. Will the house be finished in time? Can this family heal? Donna is watching and here's her take on this week's episode.

The show opens with a review of last week's show. Read my recap for all the details! This week, Gary gets the results of his medical exam, the family gets a makeover and, finally, they get their new house. Let's get right to it.

We witness Gary's physical, again. The evil Dr. Diamond grins deliciously as Gary runs himself ragged on a variety of machines. Gary is 50, and been smoking since he was 17. The doctor brings in some human lungs to make his point. We see a nice, healthy pink lung, and then compare it to two lungs from smokers, who, I assume are dead. This tactic is supposed to scare him, and it works. Gary tells us that the smoker's lung looked like a piece of burnt meat. The doctor tells him that his air sacs are starting to get destroyed, and he is heading towards emphysema. The doctor also reminds Gary that lung cancer, stroke or bladder cancer are also possibilities. "This is a serious matter," he tells us. You're darn right it is, Gary. You smoke, you die, basically. Didn't you know this?

Jay returns to the construction site. Things are falling behind, and he is worried. Nothing is done, but, fear not, Jay's on it! He confronts Scott and the triplets (why, I have no idea). Scott tells us that Jay is off base. Jay tells him he forgot to stroke Scott's ego before looking for a solution. Shut up Jay. Jay tells us that Scott is frazzled. No, I think Jay is the one who is frazzled. Jay reminds him that he is the foreman and the guy "who has to have the answers." Scott thinks his time would be better spent working on the house rather than arguing with Jay. Okay, that was a waste of five minutes of my time.

The family doesn't know that Jay took Gary to the hospital. He didn't want them to worry and wants Gary to drop the bomb on them himself. So Gary tells them that, rather than going shopping, he went to the hospital. They are stunned. He tells them that people who smoke don't know what they are doing to themselves. He flashes back to the blackened lung. His wife cries. The news is that, if he doesn't quit, he will get emphysema. He's going to quit. The doctor suggested that he gradually cut back from three packs a day to one. Steven will hold the pack, so Gary will have to ask Steven for a cigarette when he wants one. It's a deal. Steven hugs Jay. I tear up for some reason.

Day Five, and Jay continues to act like a crazed construction foreman. He is really beginning to annoy me. "We're behind. We're in trouble. We have a lot to do today," he says with great authority. In a video montage, we see doors being delivered, the roof going on, kitchen cabinets being unloaded, and the triplets unloading the plasma TVs. Scott reminds us that building a house in seven days is not standard operating procedure! We know that. Scott. Maybe someone should remind Jay.

Steven takes to the water in a sailboat that has been specially equipped so that he can sail it. This is so great. Before his accident, Steven was a real athlete, and has been forced to sit on the sidelines ever since. Mom, Sharon, wants to join him but then realizes that this is how Steven has felt watching others enjoy activities. Scott tells Jay that he had given up, but in the last two days he has realized that there's "still life to live."

Jay pitches in with the painting, and Scott shows us Steven's "endless pool." This is a neat device in which you can set up a current and swim against it, continuously. It is also a whirlpool. Scott figures he's earned a swim! But, outside, the sky is getting dark, and it appears that a huge storm is on the way. Jay brings a tarp over so that Kahi can cover the furniture. Everyone is scrambling around trying to cover things up before the rain starts.

Events start to speed up. We flip back and forth from the family to the construction site. It's going so fast, I can't even write complete paragraphs. It's makeover time. The family is separated, and won't see each other until the "reveal." Gary is getting his back waxed. I think Jude is just so grossed out by Gary that he wants to torture him! Mom tells Jude that she cuts her own hair. Steven cuts Gary's. Jude is horrified by all of this, and is determined to stop this endless cycle of hair butchery. They all get neat new styles and look downright spiffy!

The rain finally starts, but Scott has lost his mind completely and is still swimming in the pool. It is pouring, and Jay is trying to save the furniture.

Jude moves on to wardrobe. He's been chomping at the bit to toss Gary's cutoffs, and finally gets him into some pants and a real shirt. Everyone gets new outfits. Mom looks fabulous and Steven is beaming.
