A Review of Last Comic Standing 3 Winner Alonzo Bodden's CD "Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time"by Mike DeGeorge -- 12/23/04
View Printable version of this article Thanks to the fine folks at UPROAR Entertainment, I was given the opportunity to review the 2001 Alonzo Bodden CD, Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time…. One fear I had when starting up the CD was that I'd hear nothing but the same stuff he did on Last Comic Standing. As regular readers know, I'm a huge fan of Alonzo and think he deserved to win season 2 as well as season 3. But I wouldn't feel comfortable recommending that RNO readers spend their hard-earned money on material they've already heard. Oh, me of little faith. While there ARE a couple of instances where the material on the CD is similar to material he did on LCS, this is unequivocally not an issue. First off, the jokes that are similar are the funniest ones. Secondly, and most importantly, the CD has what I call the "extended dance club mix versions" of the routines. They're naturally lengthier and funnier and, in at least one case, dirtier. Alonzo isn't exactly a blue comic, but there are obviously a few routines he can't do on NBC that are included here. That alone makes this worth the purchase. Let's go through the CD track by track: Black All Over the World - He talks about being black and working for the USO, and the different reactions he gets from people in different countries. Black or White? - Yeah, I know what you're thinking, the hackneyed "differences between blacks and whites," right? Wrong. This rant includes the quote, "If one more white guy walks up to me talking black, I'll whip his ass," which must have made interaction with Ralphie May interesting. Sports Talk - I'm a sports nut, so this was one of my favorites. Bits include some of the parts heard on LCS as well as extended rants on making sports more violent and athletes as criminals. The part about Darryl Strawberry is a bit dated, but that doesn't make it any less hilarious. Stupid & Stupider - Alonzo hates stupid people, and gives many examples. Also describes how he last the last kid, as opposed to the baby, in the family. Trick Question - Rants about women, including the "Viagra for women" bit. As with the black/white issue, he treats the men/women subject with a freshness that's frankly amazing. The Right Woman - More about women, and contains unquestionably the most controversial joke on the entire CD. I'll leave it to you to discover it. In this case, the discussion of the joke is funnier than the joke itself. Just A Friend - Any man who has heard those dreaded three words can relate to this track. Again, Alonzo describes "the wave" that accompanies the words in a way that, even though you can't see him you know exactly what he's talking about. Instant Replay - This track is all about women giving men too much credit, and includes one of my favorite jokes from the show about instant replay. This track also contains the explanation to the "Seemed Like A Good Idea at the Time" joke. And to continue a theme, just when you thought you'd heard every Clinton gag on the planet, Alonzo gives us a brilliant new take that you'll kick yourself for not thinking of first. They're Complicated - Women are complicated, men are simpler. More great stuff from the battle of the sexes. I'm A Boyfriend? - The differences between just dating and being a boyfriend. Still more about men and women, including gift giving and breaking up. Clothes Shopping - As mentioned earlier, the "extended dance club mix" of the brilliant "Chair" routine from the show. I've mentioned it many times already, but it is amazing to me how Alonzo can take such played-out topics and make them fresh and hilarious. He told me in an interview we did after LCS2 that he planned on coming out with a new CD and DVD in 2005. If you're a fan of Alonzo Bodden and find that you can't wait that long, "Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time" is a no-brainer. The CD is available through uproarcomedycd.com, Alonzo's website (AlonzoBodden.com) or Amazon.com. Highest possible recommendation.
