Strange Love, Episode 7: Public Displays of Dissatisfaction

by Donna Reynolds -- 02/22/2005

Brigitte has left her fiancé Mattia home alone, winging her way to New York with Flavor Flav. Flav has a concert with his band, Public Enemy, and the first order of business is to take Brigitte shopping to get her some gear for the show. Of course, his idea of gear differs somewhat from hers, and his selections are slightly bizarre. Brigitte goes along with the hip hugger pants, but draws the line at the Timberland boots.

After shocking the store clerks by stripping off her top, she finally settles on an outfit in a particularly sickening color of green including a cap, short sweater and her trademark skintight tank top. To top it all off, she has her jeans painted in tribute to Flav, with "Fuffy" sprayed on one leg. Silly me. All along, I thought it was "Foofy Foofy," but at least according to her spelling, it is Fuffy Fuffy. To me, this is totally wrong, but who am I to argue?

After their shopping spree, Gitte and Flav stop for a bite to eat. She is becoming increasingly more irritated by his constantly being on the phone, despite the fact that he claims it is business. Never mind that the entire time they were in Italy, Brigitte was constantly whining about wanting a phone so she could talk to Mattia. I guess that's okay.

At any rate, she decides to push it a bit further and tells him she wants to call Mattia. This does not go over well at all, but I guess she makes her point. This whole Mattia thing bothers Flav to no end, but Brigitte explains that one of the reasons she wants to talk to him is because she has left her pets behind and wants to check on them. Whatever.

It's nearly show time, and Flav takes Brigitte to the theatre to meet Chuck D and the rest of his bandmates. They are all real happy to see Flav, but their reaction to Ms. Nielsen is fairly predictable. She is so big and loud and annoying, it is no wonder that they are a bit taken aback by her. The thing is, the guys aren't really rude to her despite her obnoxious behavior. But poor, sensitive Brigitte feels that they aren't accepting her, and at this point, she seems to be laying the groundwork for the fiasco that is yet to come.

And a fiasco it truly is. The band is on stage, and Flav is doing his thing. Suddenly, Brigitte gets up on the stage and starts prancing around him. She tries to kiss him and pulls the microphone out of his hand. She is doing a dance that she must think is cool, but is decidedly not. It is more than embarrassing. Flav doesn't seem to be reacting, though, and this gets her going even more. The entire scene is ridiculous.

After the show, the band really does give her the brush-off, and for good reason. But the drama isn't about her. Flav discovers that while they were onstage, $2000 seems to have disappeared from his pants pockets. He goes ballistic, smashing a glass and overturning a table. This behavior frightens Brigitte, and she rushes out of the dressing room in tears. Flav is out of control, but tells us that it is better than he smashed something rather than someone.

One of the members of Flav's entourage chases Brigitte down in the street and tries to calm her. Flav catches up, and rather than try to console him over his loss, Brigitte's only concern is that she left her cigarettes behind. Flav starts to lose it, but to his credit, he manages to control himself. Brigitte misses the implications of all of this, however, and continues bitching about how she can't stand his tantrums. As they enter the limousine, she announces that she will be getting her own room since she doesn't want to sleep in the same room with him. She tells us that she went to the bar for some cocktails. I'm sure she did.

In the final scene of the evening, it appears that they are at least talking, but she crashes on the bed while he sacks out on the couch. She tells us that if he pulls a stunt like this again, she will go back to Italy. Period. Can't say as I blame her, but if she continues acting like a fool in front of his friends, he just might not be sorry to see her go.

Next week, Brigitte meets Flav's family. Now this ought to be real interesting. 'Til then, keep smiling!
