American Idol 4, March 9: Movin’ On!

by Sting7 -- 03/10/2005
Tonight, the Top 12 will be known, at the expense of two more men and women who wil fall short of the mark. After this week, every man or woman for herself! Lindsey Cardinale hasn’t delivered on her potential, so the judges have been saying, but will America disagree?

Ryan welcomes us and tells us a record-breaking 120 million votes had been cast (not sure if that was last night or the last two nights). We get a recap of Tuesday night, so it looks like the ladies are first to get the verdict. Then we get a recap of Monday night and the guys.

Ryan calls Mario, Lindsey, Anthony, and Vonzell to the stage. They are told they are all in the Top 12! Hugs all around. Ryan then points out that Bo and Constantine, the two rockers, are still waiting, "which one stays, and which one goes." What? One of them is leaving? Please be Constantine! Commercial! Argh!

Back from commercial, rapid-fire verdicts.

Carrie is in the top 12!

Nadia is in the top 12!

Now, Ryan calls Bo and Constantine to the stage. Ryan asks Constantine if he thinks having two rockers may have been splitting the demographic. Constantine says no, but they’ve had a lot of fun. Decision time. Bo is in the Top 12! And, Constantine is in the Top 12!

Alright, so we know Mario, Lindsey, Anthony, Vonzell, Carrie, Nadia, Bo, and Constantine are in the Top 12. That leaves Travis, Janay, Jessica, Scott, Mikalah, Amanda, Anwar, and Nikko. Can Janay’s apparently powerful fan base keep her alive? Can Travis’ squeal-appeal send him to the Top 12? If so, at who’s expense?

Ryan calls Travis, Scott, Nikko, and Anwar. Anwar is in the Top 12!

Ryan then calls Jessica, Mikalah, Amanda, and Janay. Jessica is in the Top 12!

There are only two seats left. One man, one woman. Travis, Scott and Nikko remain for the men. Personally, I liked all of them. Travis seems doomed, Scott’s commentary to Simon after his critique, I think, may spell his doom (I got plenty of emails saying he didn’t say anything disrespectful, some people claim he was trying to calm the booing audience. That’s not his job. Say nothing! If you come off at all arrogant, it will ruin you.) Nikko is on a roll, I can’t imagine he’s going home.

Of the ladies, Amanda is sitting between the teenagers, and I don’t think she can overcome both of them. Mikalah was very ambitious, Janay is very cute. I think Mikalah may go on.

Ryan brings Travis, Scott, Nikko to the center of the stage. Ryan asks Randy who should make it to the Top 12. Randy says Scott or Nikko. Paula won’t choose. Simon says he knows who will go - Travis. Paula says she’s proud of all of them. Scott has made it to the Top 12! Travis and Nikko are out! Wow! Ryan thanks them for their service.

Now Amanda, Mikalah, and Janay. Randy thinks Mikalah is still his favorite. Mikalah does make it into the Top 12! Janay and Amanda are eliminated. Amanda is fighting hard to hold back tears, Janay looks... relieved?

Cute little dancing montage of the Top 12. Ryan asks what advice the judges have. Randy says bring it every night. Paula asks if they have any questions. They don’t. Simon says it’s about being original, don’t compromise. Paula says take risks. Randy says it’s not about song choices, sing whatever it is. Paula tells Mikalah to be goofy again.

This was promising to be a season full of heartbreaks. I really thought Nikko had done enough to stick around. Was choosing a classic Ray Charles song too big a gamble to pay off? Personally, I think Constantine should be on that plane home, not Nikko. Travis followed the judges’ advice and was The Entertainer more than a singer, but America just didn’t buy in. For the ladies, Amanda never sang badly really, she just didn’t stand out somehow. In another season, she may well have been Top 5. For Janay, it was just a matter of time. She’s just a little too green still to be ready for this level. Give her time, she’ll make you remember her.

So, here's your Top 12 –

  • Bo Bice
  • Lindsey Cardinale
  • Anthony Fedorov
  • Mikalah Gordon
  • Constantine Maroulis
  • Anwar Robinson
  • Scott Savol
  • Jessica Sierra
  • Vonzell Solomon
  • Nadia Turner
  • Carrie Underwood
  • Mario Vazquez

An exciting Top 12! The real competition starts next week. No more three nights of Idol! I didn’t hate it, but... you know. Come on.
