The Ashlee Simpson Show - Season 2, Episode 7: Ch-Ch-Ch-Changesby Jenn Brasler -- 03/11/2005
View Printable version of this article Previously on Ashlee: It was Christmas, and Ashlee and Ryan played some Jingle Ball shows. Ashlee also had dinner with her band. Ashlee and Ryan are in New York for New Years. Afterwards, Ashlee will head to Miami for the Orange Bowl. The two read magazines; Ashlee is shocked by one that reports that Jessica gave Nick permission to invite Ashlee to Hawaii. Ashlee says that she was the one who invited them. She reads another report that she’s looking into getting breast implants. This is news to Ryan, who asks if it’s true. Ashlee tells him that she likes her breasts. Lauren, Stephanie, and Lucy are also in New York. The three of them go shopping with Ashlee and buy white feather boas to wear for New Years. One of the employees at the store they go to is excited that Ashlee signed a shirt for him. Ashlee gets ready for an MTV party, telling her friends that she wants a Marcia Brady hairstyle. As the girls drive to the party, either Lauren or Stephanie (sorry, don’t know which is which) asks their driver why people are lined up on the streets. He explains that they’re headed for Times Square to watch the ball drop. Lauren or Stephanie thought that they just stood around on the street all night. She asks if there’s a real ball that drops; the driver confirms that there is. “Does it shatter?” Lauren or Stephanie asks. The driver shrugs, probably wondering how he got stuck with this job. Ashlee et al arrive at MTV’s Iced Out party, which is full of celebrities. Ryan is there, and Hilarie Burton (former VJ and star of One Tree Hill) is doing interviews. Ashlee thinks Hilarie is checking Ryan out. She gives Ryan a few looks that say, “Don’t forget about me, your girlfriend!” Lauren or Stephanie says that she needs a hot guy to kiss at midnight, but she doesn’t get her wish. At 12, Ashlee and Ryan kiss and Ashlee says that 2005 is off to a great start. Ashlee explains that, at the Orange Bowl, she has to change some of the lyrics to “La La.” Specifically, she has to alter the lyrics “I’ll be your French maid,” “I like it better when it hurts,” and “you can dress me up in dirt.” Ashlee discusses possible changes, considering, “I like it better when we flirt.” She says that when she first heard about the need for the changes, she thought it was a joke. Ashlee et al head to Miami Beach. Ooh, “American Idiot”! Thanks, music guys! Ashlee talks about how the halftime show has to be “family-oriented,” which is why she has to change the lyrics. Ashlee, Ryan, and friends wait in some room, which contains Hanukkah presents and decorations, for some reason. Ashlee spots a teddy bear wearing a yarmulke and calls it a “mazel tov.” Ryan asks her if she knows what a menorah is; she calls it “eight days of Hanukkah.” Oh, those crazy Christians. (Hey, I’m one, too. Don’t send me hate mail!) Everyone goes into the stadium. Ryan and Steph want to play football; Ashlee wants to be a cheerleader. Her dancers are going to dress like cheerleaders, and she wants them to look like cheerleaders who were kicked off of the squad. Ashlee rehearses. In the car, Ashlee says that she’s stressed out. She takes photos with fans and has a mini press conference, where she says that she’s rooting for USC, because Nick would be mad at her if she didn’t. She does a show called a Beach Bash and announces that she usually brings a fan up on stage when she does “Pieces of Me.” Before she can, Ryan runs out and starts goofing off and singing with her. She says that he was trying to make her laugh and release some of her tension. The group gets a police escort back to the Executive Clubhouse. Ryan is excited because they’re running red lights and making people stop for them. He says that the other drivers probably think they’re part of a funeral procession. “I feel like the President’s daughter,” he says. He wonders if he’s the only one fascinated by this. At the Clubhouse, Ashlee, Ryan, and friends play Pictionary. Later, she practices her new lyrics, both alone and with Steph. Ashlee goes to a sound check and sees her bad cheerleaders. She says that the feed in her earpiece is different from what she’s used to, and there’s a three-second delay in the stadium, so she’s uncomfortable. She tells Joe that she forgot the words. Afterward, she tells someone else (I think it’s Jordan, from her label) that Joe is mad and Jordan should tell him that she won’t mess up when she performs. She says that she has too much to think about at once. She’s on her way back to the Clubhouse when Joe calls her back to make her prove that she knows the words. Ashlee admits that she’s a little scared. Ashlee rehearses the song again and gets the lyrics right. She says that she wants to prove to everyone that she can put on a live show, but it’s hard when things have been changed. She practices in the car again. On the way to the Orange Bowl, she tells security guards who are holding up traffic that she’s performing. Backstage, Jessica tells her not to feel pressure. She says that if she sings the wrong words, she shouldn’t care. Maybe she shouldn’t, but Joe will. Ashlee practices with Tina, then with Steph. On the field, she greets her dancers. Just before the performance, Ashlee notes that she can only hear static in her earpiece. Steph tells her to pull it out. Ashlee heads to the stage in slow motion. What happens? I don’t know. To be continued…. Next week: After the Orange Bowl, Ashlee goes to Europe for a press tour. She goes to a club and meets some of her British fans. She visits a doctor, who wants to have a “serious discussion” about her voice. Jenn Brasler is an aspiring writer from Falls Church, VA. You can e-mail her at luckyjenn@hotmail.com.
