American Idol 4, April 20: The Last Dance

by Sting7 -- 04/21/2005
Last night, on American Idol, the remaining seven took a shot at dance music of the seventies. Tonight, in the most grueling season ever, another talent has fallen. Here’s a hint – three weeks ago, you would have said no way will this person leave before final three! You would have been wrong. It couldn’t possibly be the angelic Anwar Robinson? Could it?

Ryan welcomes us, and launches right into the debut of his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Executive Producer Ken Warwick says he is the consummate professional, Nigel Lythgow says his grasp of languages is incredible. Of course, this is accompanied by some off-the-cuff Ryan moments. Congratulations Ryan. Somehow, you’ve become irreplaceable.

Ryan, blushing a little, tells us the Idols will be performing a song written by John Farrar, best known for his collaborations with Olivia Newton-John in her pop career with songs like "Magic," "Suddenly," and "You’re the One That I Want." The Idols sing "You Can Shine." Interestingly, Carrie and Bo are playing guitars (borrowing a bit from Canadian Idol last season). Vonzell and Scott do a nice bit of harmonizing together. Anthony outsings Constantine in their segment. But, truth be told, not a song I would buy. Sorry, John.

Time for the commercial. This time, Stray Cats’ "Rock This Town." Not sure how to describe it, they had huge heads and little bodies. Good production values though.

Then, Ryan gives us the recap of last night’s show. If you recall, I put Vonzell, Scott and Anwar in the bottom three. It was a tough call, everyone did a very good job last night.

Ryan says he will separate them into two groups. This usually means something shocking is going to happen.

Vonzell - far side of the stage

Anthony - near side of the stage (okay, I am already wrong).

Anwar - near side of the stage (uh-oh)

Constantine - far side of the stage (I’m already guessing this will be the safe side)

Commercial! Okay, Vonzell and Constantine were strong last night. Why did I put Vonzell in the bottom three? Not that I don’t adore her, but somebody has to go there! She’s been there before, I wonder if America has truly embraced her yet. But what about Constantine? Did the go-first curse strike him this time? Was he a little too Vegas last night, as Simon said?

Carrie - joining Vonzell and Constantine.

Scott - joining Anthony and Anwar

Bo (who was already called the star of the night, watch what happens here!) - is safe! But, Ryan asks him to join the group he thinks is the top group tonight. Bo stands squarely in the middle between the two groups. And, if he wins American Idol (despite the rumors that he doesn’t really want to) it will this moment that clinched it for him. At least he managed to keep from looking stricken like poor George Huff did last year when put in a similar position.

Ryan tells Bo to step to his right. Meaning, Anwar, Scott, and Anthony are the bottom three. (Two out of three for me again! Sting7 is safe! )

Ryan asks Paula why he is there in the bottom three. Paula says, well, babbles, something like everybody is good– it’s strange – heartstrings of America– I will not pay a lot for this muffler– I don’t know. Thanks for that.

Ryan wastes no time: Scott step forward. Anthony step forward. Anwar has been eliminated. Anwar takes it well, the judges stand and applaud for him. Now for the funeral video. The angelic music teacher has fallen. That will shake up the oddsmakers, who all seem to place him in the top three!

How did this happen? David Bloomberg is probably already delving into this one, but I think it was because he sort of bailed on "September." If you want to impress us, do the falsetto! He didn’t and it became a great big reason not to vote for him. Vonzell and Carrie put themselves at risk with vocally demanding songs. Anwar did his usual Anwar-izations, but it still felt like a bunt when you want a home run. And this season, you only need one misstep and you are gone! If there was some way of measuring it, I would bet that there are more new voters this season than any other. It almost makes it like the first season all over again. And, more fair. Just my take on it.

As for Anwar, he seems like a genuine good guy. I hope things go well for him. Meanwhile, Scott’s fans are keeping him here, like I told you they would. Whether you like him or hate him, respect him, please. He’s made top six. He has a beautiful voice, this is not a Jon Stevens sympathy thing going on here. Also, Anthony is beginning to gel. Personally, I don’t think Anthony has had a bad week. He has looked a bit stiff, but even that is diminishing. Watch out for him!

Let’s do it all again next week, shall we?
