The Cut: Where Do We Go From Here?by Phil Kural -- 09/01/2005
View Printable version of this article Shock. Complete and total shock. That was the only way the look on my face could be described. I was sitting over a friend’s house when I watched The Cut last week, and I couldn’t believe my eyes. Did Tommy Hilfiger just eliminate Deanna AND Wes? Yes, he did! Did he possibly just make the dumbest move this season, capping off a dozen or so other stupid decisions that he has made? Yes, he did! I must have been dreaming – Wes and Deanna are still in the competition, right? Afraid not. I had said in my article a few weeks ago that Wes would win the whole thing, and Deanna would place around third, not making the finals probably because her style is very different than what I think Tommy is going for. Deanna had her own sense of style, that maybe did have a Melrose feel, but it was totally Deanna. That’s what I loved about her. I don’t think she was cocky as most did, but comfortable with what she was doing. She had knowledge about the industry, and knew who her audience was. However, that being said, I do understand to a point that she was not right for Hilfiger or his corporation. She’s going to be big one day, mark my words. Some of her designs are a little over the top, but that’s just Deanna. She’s unique like that. I can’t wait to see where she ends up. The elimination of Wes is what I’m still having problems understanding. Like I said, I watched last week’s episode at a friend’s house. He had never watched the show, and even he asked me who Wes was, noting that he had the best sense of style when it came to the final six. It’s clear that Wes, just like Deanna, has a working knowledge of the fashion world. However, it’s also clear that he has plenty of experience, much more than say, Elizabeth or Felix, and knows how to execute his ideas. My problem is that Tommy Hilfiger wants to be unpredictable and shocking, and his way of doing that last week was to eliminate the two most creative people on the show. My stomach was actually turning! Some have said that it was stupid for Wes and Deanna to take a nap, and that was their downfall. I totally disagree with that, simply because they finished the task, and the only thing that was directly affected by the nap was the fact that they didn’t have enough time to finish the jacket that the male mannequin was wearing. No biggie. They were well rested and were working well together, showing that at least they know how to work with other people. My gripe is that as usual, Elizabeth complained the whole time, forced her ideas down Felix’s throat, and didn’t look like she even cared about what the challenge was. It made no sense. I don’t understand why people had to (in the words of Tommy) “Live and die by teams.” If you want someone to work with you so badly, you wouldn’t eliminate them. Tommy admitted that Wes was a creative genius. Then he goes and eliminates him, just because he didn’t like what Deanna did. Elizabeth was able to skate by as usual, and face no repercussions. Why does this keep happening? Will it continue to do so? I have a fear. Judging by the previews that we’ve seen from this week, it looks like Princess might be in trouble. She’s seen gossiping to Tommy that nobody expected Liz to still be around in the final four. Tommy is not going to like that, and will, in another dumb move, will eliminate Princess. I would venture to say at this point that Princess is probably the most talented person left, although it is very possible that her tongue will get her in trouble, just like it has in the past. This would leave us with a final three of Felix, Liz, and Chris. If this show wants to regain, or even dig up any credibility (since I feel that it has none at this point), Princess or Chris will win this thing. If Liz wins, I will actually have a negative amount of respect for Tommy. If it’s Felix, I’ll just continue to have no respect. The bottom line is that just like many contestants on this show, Deanna and Wes were eliminated before they should have been. Hell, Wes, in the opinion of many, including me, should have won! Deanna should have been right there with him. Now I am left wondering what Tommy is going to do next to make himself look like an idiot. I guess I’ll find out Friday.
