The Apprentice: Martha Stewart is on the move this week. Starting Wednesday, October 5, the show will be on at 9:00 Eastern/8:00 Central, one hour later than its previous time slot.

The new time slot is going to be a tough one. The show is now on opposite ABC’s smash hit Lost. Why the move? NBC has swapped Martha with their new drama E-Ring. The new version of The Apprentice has delivered lackluster ratings – so far bringing in about 6.5 million viewers per episode. NBC has hopes that E-Ring, which logged 7.7 million viewers last week, will fare better in the 8:00 PM slot, where competition isn’t as fierce. The network appears to want to promote E-Ring, and if they have to throw The Apprentice: Martha Stewart to the wolves (or polar bears) of Lost, then so be it.

It’s hard to say why the show is doing so poorly in the ratings, but I do have a few theories. I think it was a mistake for NBC to air two versions of The Apprentice at the same time. Lip service has been paid to the distinctions between the two shows – it’s not a boardroom, it’s a conference room! Not a suite, but a loft! No one says “You’re fired!” – the two are essentially the same. We’ve got gorgeous people with killer resumes competing for a job; the rest is really semantics. To watch both shows at the same time, viewers really have to be willing to put in some effort to keep from confusing the two… which show was Josh on again? Wait, which one is Dawna? I suspected that viewers would only watch one of the shows. I would have guessed, though, that the new boss, Martha, would win out.

The Apprentice: Martha Stewart isn’t going to just roll over, of course. NBC promises an exciting episode this week. One of the candidates will learn that his wife has just had a baby. He will choose to remain in the competition, dedicating his quest to his new baby. This means that his wife is a whole lot more patient than I would be in the same situation!

In this week’s task, candidates will have to design and bake an original wedding cake. They’ll then take the cake to the Michael C. Fina bridal Expo and attempt to sell as much cake as possible. Special guest stars Donald and Melania Trump will share the reward with the winning team.

The teams are Matchstick (Jim, Dawn, Shawn, Bethenny, Marcela, and David) and Primarius (Howie, Amanda, Carrie, Jennifer, Leslie, Dawna, Ryan, and Sarah). Matchstick has so far lost both tasks, and candidates Jim and Dawn have landed in the boardroom both times.
