The Amazing Race 9: The Finish Line, Episode 7by Teeuwynn Woodruff -- 04/19/2006
View Printable version of this article Welcome to this week's Finish Line! This week I have the pleasure of telling you what Lake & Michelle had to say about getting Philiminated last week. I was definitely not a Lake & Michelle fan, so I'm curious to hear how they explain themselves on the show. So, let's get to it! Peggy Bunker and Jon Weiss welcome us and Lake & Michelle to the show. Peggy tells them that she's excited to have them on the show and she's sure there will be lots of questions. Peggy starts off by asking how watching the show and seeing themselves get eliminated was. Michelle says it was a lot less emotional than she thought it would be – she got it all out during the race. Lake says that leg was really long and it really got to him. They were so stressed and lost. Michelle says that they asked so many people about where they were going and couldn't get any help. Now Peggy asks Lake & Michelle about their personal interactions with each other, “especially you, Mister,” with all of his “shut ups” and the other things Lake said to Michelle. Wow, Peggy can't wait to sink her fangs into these two. She's already asking the tough questions! Yay! She does say that “shut up” with a Southern accent at least sounds softer. Peggy asks if Lake realized how he talked to Michelle on the race. Lake sounds a bit sheepish as he says that he didn't realize. Lake goes on to say that Michelle hung in there with him and talked back some. Jon says good for Michelle for saying something to Lake. Lake goes on to say how great Michelle did at the race and that he didn't give her enough credit at the time. She did really great the last leg and practically solved the last detour herself. (Practically?) Michelle now jumps in to say that the bickering was worse on the race and that it came across sharper than they really are in their normal lives. Then Lake & Michelle say that they thought they didn't fight at all on the race and did great together. Huh? Michelle says that they told their families how proud they'd be when they saw them on the race, because they didn't fight with each other and were really sweet. Yeesh. These two really need a box of clues handed to them in real life – about their relationship. Peggy now invites viewers to call in, saying this is our chance to “really stick it to” Lake & Michelle. She corrects herself and says she means we can ask questions. Hmmm... I think Peggy's having some trouble disguising her loathing of this couple! Lake & Michelle protest Peggy's wording and she backpedals some more, saying that she can tell Lake & Michelle really love each other a lot. Jon says that he understands the pressure on a married couple on the race. He's been married almost twenty years and Lake & Michelle have been married fifteen years. Both couples have three kids and Jon says this was probably the most time Lake & Michelle spent with just each other in years. There were no distractions with work or kids. Just their relationship. Jon asks if Lake & Michelle learned anything about their relationship and themselves on the race. Lake says that there were times he got frustrated with Michelle because he thought she was getting negative and he was always so positive. He says they would have loved to have won, but they did make it through seven episodes, and they know they could have been out in that cane field in Brazil. Peggy asks about Lake & Michelle's relationship with Fran, referring to when Fran dissed them at the airport a couple of episodes ago. Lake says they thought they had a great relationship with her until that moment. Then, Fran was suddenly really ugly. Jon points out that you really get a chance to talk to other teams at the pit stops. Lake says she never talked to them about what happened. Peggy says that Fran got her “payback” having to do the bungee jump in last week's episode, when that was one of her biggest fears. Michelle said Fran did really well. Michelle says that she had just finished her jump when Fran asked her what the jump was like. Michelle didn't know at the time how Fran did or how scared she really was. Peggy takes this opportunity to let us all relive Fran's abject terror at doing the bungee jump with a clip of that very thing. Fran looks just as terrified as she did on the episode. And good for her for overcoming her fear! Jon asks what their kids thought of Michelle's jump. She says she doesn't know because one son was in the bathroom and a daughter was at her sister-in-law's place. Peggy thinks it should garner Michelle some “serious street cred” with her kids. Peggy introduces Andrew from Dallas. He asks why Lake & Michelle used their yield on Dani & Danielle instead of Ray & Yolanda. Michelle notes that it's a good question. She says that they had been racing up and down hills before they found the actual yield. While they were doing that, Dani & Danielle caught up to them and were right at their heels. She says that when you get to the yield box everybody's picture is still in it and you're not sure who's come by. So, they knew Dani & Danielle were behind them. That's why they did it. Peggy points out that Dani & Danielle were really pissed at them for using the yield on them. Michelle says she knows the girls thought that she and Lake knew Ray & Yolanda were behind them also, but that they weren't actually sure. They hadn't seen Ray & Yolanda all day and thought they were behind them, but they weren't 100% sure. Peggy just says to watch out if they meet Dani & Danielle in a dark alley- they should run away. Lake says they apologized after the leg, but it didn't do any good. Lake & Michelle point out that it's a competition and they did what they had to do. I am glad to hear Lake & Michelle didn't know that Ray & Yolanda were definitely still behind them. Because I hate boneheaded moves, and yielding the Double Ds over Ray & Yolanda was definitely not a good move if you knew both those teams were behind you. Mark from Washington now calls in to say “Lake, Lake, Lake, shame on you for the way you talk to your wife! You make the rest of us guys look good.” Lake thanks Mark for that. He then says he didn't realize how well she was doing and says he encourages her a lot, but he did give her a hard time a couple of times. Jon asks if Lake regrets how he behaved. He says he doesn't know if he regrets it, but he wishes he had listened to her more. Lake then once again blows it by saying that she was finally coming into her own on the last couple of legs and more of a help, thus implying that Michelle was terrible in the first part of the race. Lake notes that this was “an error in my leadership.” Hold on a sec while I bang my head against the wall in disgust with Lake's mysogynistic ramblings about his wife. There. Ow. Jon makes me smile by saying that Michelle was really the one who was keeping the team on track in the race. Peggy agrees, saying that Michelle did great. It's pretty funny that both hosts are trying to be polite, but it's pretty clear that neither one is exactly ready to join Lake's fan club (membership: Lake). 1 2 3 Next-->View Printable version of this article
