Dating in the Dark, August 11: The Humpty Dance

by Jeff Friend -- 08/13/2009
Last week’s episode offered some intrigue as the participants (particularly the ladies) ignored the matches set up by the pre-show questionnaire and went about acting crazy. Will the power of the questionnaires return this week or will we be in store for more insanity? Will someone bust the wrong move?

This Week’s Participants:

Jeff: Age 23. He’s an aerospace engineer. He says his awesome career and education are dating setbacks. Give it time, my friend. You are a catch. You’ve got it all together at 23 and you have the best first name ever!

Amit: Age 29. Amit is an internet marketing consultant who is originally from Israel. He talks about how he was a nerd as a kid when he came to the states.

Cormac: 32. He’s a paramedic looking for a woman with a zest for life.

Shannon: Age 24. Shannon is a brand manager for a margarita company. I like her already!

Misty: Age 35. She owns her own marketing and management company. She’s looking for trust and goofiness.

Kelly: Age 25. Kelly is a product coordinator/waitress. If anyone out there knows what a “product coordinator” is, let me know.

The Group Date – In the Dark!

As usual, everyone stumbles in and laughs about how dark it is in the darkroom. After introductions are made, Misty and Cormac seem to bond over their shared love of boxing. Shannon tells everyone that she’s a dancer while Kelly talks of her passion for surfing. There seem to be no unpopular responses to the question, “What do you like to do for fun?”

After the date, each side assesses their preferences while in the safety of their sequestered area. Amit tells the guys he prefers Misty, while Jeff prefers Shannon and Cormac prefers Kelly. On the other side of the house, Misty says she prefers Amit at this point, while Shannon is considering Jeff and Cormac. Kelly says she prefers Cormac. Let the battle for Cormac begin!

This Weeks Get-To-Know-You Activity:

This week we won’t get to watch people rummage through each other’s underclothes or wallets and purses. Nope, this week it’s a video tour through their houses! This should be interesting.

First up is Misty. Misty’s place is immaculately clean. The guys wonder if she stays at a hotel. Everything is color coordinated very well. She even has glasses on the dining room table that have matching napkins folded and placed inside. I guess we see how Misty spends her spare time.

Now the ladies are looking at Amit’s place. I must say that his place looks just as nice as Misty’s. It’s the kind of place I wish I would have had as a single guy. However, as we see more of his house the women start wondering if he lives with his parents.

It’s now the guy’s turn to look at Kelly’s abode. I’m sorry, but all these places look totally staged. Either that or I’m starting to realize what homes can look like without kids and dogs running around. Having said that, the guys are happy to see Kelly’s surf boards in her bedroom.

Back with the girls, it’s time for them to explore Jeff’s place. Unfortunately for Jeff, it seems that the girls think he is a bit on the feminine side. They note his handwriting and bedroom as being girly. Kelly even says that his place is “more feminine than my own apartment!” The white teddy bear with the pink bow and the pink nose doesn’t help matters. Kelly and Misty think Jeff is now lacking masculinity, but Shannon says she likes a sensitive guy. I wonder if that’s code for “a guy I can walk all over?”

Speaking of Shannon, it’s time to tour her place. Shannon’s place so far reflects the kind of place I’m used to. It is a bit untidy and unorganized with some ants crawling around. Jeff is taken aback by the disorganization.

We wrap up the tours with a look at Cormac’s living space. Man, I hope it’s a pig sty. Cormac’s place is also clean. What does it say about me that everyone’s cleanliness blows my mind? Anyway, his place is pretty basic. The women find it the most down-to-earth and the guitar on the bed is somehow sexy to them.

Dating in the Dark – Round 2 –The First One-on-One Date:

The one-on-one dates start off this week with Misty and Amit. Amit guides Misty to the couch and asks her why she chose him. She says she thought they had the most chemistry and similar interests. Misty follows Amit’s query with “Who do you live with?” It had to be asked. Amit reveals he lives in a guest house but is getting ready to buy his own house in about a month. Well, it’s certainly a good time to buy your first place. Misty seems approving of this and then they both commence with the face groping. Looks like they both like each other.

For the second date, Shannon invites Cormac. Me thinks this bodes ill for Jeff. However, when Shannon defends the ants in her kitchen as being her pets, Cormac tells us he thinks Shannon is bubblier than he prefers. He says he likes a more “soulful” woman and Shannon seems too “cheerleader-ish.” This bodes well for Jeff.

Speaking of Jeff, he invites Shannon for his date. Jeff asks Shannon, “When you get your hair done, how much do you spend?” He’s ecstatic about her $15 answer. And now he gropes her face. After all the muscle-feeling and Shannon-lifting, Shannon admits that she likes Jeff and wants to see more of him.

Wrapping things up, Cormac and Kelly have a date in which they invited each other. They talk surfing then Kelly tells us how much she likes Cormac.

From what I’ve seen so far, I’m betting these might be our “compatibility matches” and likely also our final couples.

Dating in the Dark – Round 3 – The Compatibility Matches:

Will the power of the pre-show questionnaire matches return this week? As I said, I’m betting they just confirm the choices the participants have already made.

The matches this week are:

Kelly and Cormac – told you.

Misty and Amit – told you.

Shannon and Jeff – told you!

On their date, Jeff brings some desert and wine for Shannon in an effort to seem romantic. Jeff asks her if he could feed her the desert. How feminine to ask! Shannon uses the words “cute,” “sweet,” and “adorable,” to describe Jeff. Yikes, I sense trouble for the guy. However, he returns to his side of the house with lipstick all over his face! Nice.

Amit and Misty are the next in the darkroom. Misty has brought a hula-hoop. They hula, then trade the hula-hoop for boxing gloves. All-in-all, they both have fun and seem to have good chemistry with each other.

Finally, it’s Cormac and Kelly. Cormac has brought his guitar. He sings for Kelly, and I don’t see how this can backfire. Kelly asks him to describe his kissing style. Come on, just get it over with and have him give a demonstration! Cormac doesn’t demonstrate his slow kissing style because he wants to wait for the right moment.
