So You Think You Can Dance Canada 2, September 16: Oh, It’s “Most Popular” Dancer?

by Brian Towers -- 09/17/2009
The folks shown at right await this week’s performance taping. This is elimination night – will they be pleased or disappointed with the results? How did your favourites fare? Read on and see!

In this week’s performance episode, the top 14 dancers had the opportunity to strut their stuff. Based on what I saw, no one really deserves to go home. Trust me… two of them will. You can read my version of things here.

Tonight, the show begins with what series host Leah Miller has promised is a very hot number. Choreographed by Blake McGrath, they dance to “LoveGame” by the ever-present Lady Gaga. The dancers are dressed in B&D leathers, and the gals have whips. That seems like a poor idea!

The dancing reminds me of robot vampires locking.

Is it all that sexy? Some of it goes farther than it needs to, but it’s not quite pole dancing. The way this series is going, I expect we’ll see that in a couple of weeks!

Leah informs us there were over a million votes cast last night, then re-introduces principal judges Jean Marc Genereux and Tré Armstrong and their weekly helpers, Dan Karaty and Karen Kain. Karen brought a touch of class to the proceeding last night that is welcome in these quarters.

Leah moves immediately to the results, calling forth the first four couples and showing us video of their performances from last night. Leah starts reading out the results. Melanie and Cody are in the top twelve. Corynne and Austin are also safe. This leaves Amy and Vincent, and Jayme Rae and Daniel. Leah reports that Amy and Vincent are in the bottom… and adds that Jayme Rae and Daniel are also dancing for their lives.

Leah brings the remaining couples to centre stage, and shows video from their performances. First up is the pair of Kim and Emanuel. They are safe. Only one of Natalie and Danny, and Tara-Jean and Everett are safe. Tara-Jean and Everett… are safe. Therefore, it’s Natalie and Danny who will perform solos.

The gals are going to dance off first this week. Amy is first, with what I might call a techno-contemporary routine. Don’t bother looking that up, I’m inventing terms as I type! Jayme Rae dances second, with a contemporary solo to Matt Dusk’s “Feeling Good.” A flip is almost not completed, but there’s a lot of content and she might have topped Amy. Natalie follows with her krump routine. She hits it hard – I think it’s the best of the three.

The guys dance next. Vincent leads off, with his unique blend of ballroom and more modern styles. He even slips the worm in there! The footwork is really sharp. Daniel is next, and his style is house/hip-hop. There are some interesting moves, but I was actually looking for more. Third up is Danny. Same story, except he dances in the contemporary style. I’m not sure how the judges will decide.

We’re set to hear results already. Jean Marc tells Amy that last night, she nailed her performance. Jayme Rae is told she is one of the strongest dancers, but last night was not her best performance. Natalie hears she is a conqueror and has come far.

The judges tell Jayme Rae her solo was amazing, and she’s safe. Natalie, however, has gone as far as she can, and it’s she who is eliminated. Amy is safe once again. Natalie’s funeral video is run, after which she thanks everyone and says it’s the best experience she’s ever had.

Tré has the guy’s results. She tells us the show is about personality as much as it is about dance. Tré begins by saying Daniel performed well, but not last night. Danny hears he is a strong contemporary dancer. Tré further thinks last night was Vincent’s best performance. He’s safe. Next, Danny hears that he is a strong technical dancer, but his personality hasn’t come through. He’s going home, and Daniel is safe. We see Danny’s journey, and afterward, he’s still smiling.

Leah quickly wraps the show in the usual manner, and we’re done.

Wrapping Up

I picked two of the right groups for my bottom three last night, but missed naming one of the eliminated dancers. Who knew it was time to play the “personality” card?

As an entire partnership was expunged, no new pairings are forced on the dancers.

Did the judges get it right? Who’s going to be in the finals, and who might win? Let me know your thoughts at the address below!
