So You Think You Can Dance Canada 2, September 23: Naming The Final Ten!by Brian Towers -- 09/24/2009
View Printable version of this article In this week’s performance episode, the top 12 dancers had the opportunity to strut their stuff. For me, the highlight was a snazzy tap number from Everett and Tara-Jean. You can read my version of things here. Series host Leah Miller begins tonight’s show by telling us that once again, “over one million” votes were cast. I think we’re stuck at that level! The group number follows. A hip-hop routine created by Luther Brown, it’s Kim-centric. It’s pretty decent work by everyone, though. The music is “The Jump Off,” by Lil’ Kim. For those of you who don’t already know, Lil’ Kim is a judge on America’s Best Dance Crew, and no one messes with her – ever. That’s a great show with great imagination shown by the performers, who choreograph themselves, and I recommend it to everyone. Yes, even those of you who thought you’d never be caught dead watching the dreaded MuchMusic station! Leah returns to introduce principal judges Jean Marc Genereux and Tré Armstrong and their weekly helpers, Mia Michaels and Rex Harrington. I forgot to mention last time that Rex is a former dancer with The National Ballet Of Canada and a member of Canada’s Walk Of Fame. That’s why ballet dancers Emanuel and Corynne were so excited to dance before him! Leah moves immediately to the results. She calls for the first three couples, showing us video of their performances from last night, and then informs them who gets the rest of the night off. First up is the pair of Kim and Emanuel. They are in the top ten. However, Melanie and Cody must dance later tonight. Corynne and Austin must also come back and dance for their lives. Leah brings the remaining couples to centre stage, to repeat the process for them. She points out that two of them are safe. First up is the tapping couple, Tara-Jean and Everett. They are safe. Finally… Jayme Rae and Daniel are in danger, so for a change, Amy and Vincent are safe! The women dance off first this week. Melanie is first, with what I might call a contemporary routine with a hint of locking added. Corynne’s high kicks, spins, and stretches well exhibit her great lines. Jayme Rae dances last, with a contemporary solo that begins with a move that made me think she was going to do “the sprinkler!” Instead, she shows off her fluidity and control. There’s not much to choose between these three solid performances, so probably, some other factor is going to determine who goes home. The guys dance next. Cody shows us some of his smooth hip-hop moves that are primarily footwork. I think we’ve seen some of this before; I could be wrong. It seems Austin is a regular in this segment each week. This time he shows us a lot more style and less frenetic athletics, which ought to serve him well. Third up is a shirtless Daniel, with a sharp hip-hop routine. With the preliminaries over, it’s time for the final decisions. Jean Marc addresses the ladies first. He tells them he couldn’t be more proud of them, but someone must go home. He informs us that all of them have been in the bottom three twice already. Jean Marc tells Melanie she is “a beast.” She’s staying. He then says to Corynne that she didn’t do her best work last night. She’s leaving us and Jayme Rae is safe. Corynne tells us the top ten is a deserving group, and we see video of her time on the show. As usual, Tré has the guy’s results. She tells Cody he struggled with jazz last night. Austin did well last night, but is reminded he’s already been in the bottom three times (I think he remembered on his own… just guessing). Daniel hears he struggled last night as well. Cody… is safe. Austin is asked to step forward. He is… not leaving us tonight. It’s Daniel who is going home. He tells us he learned a lot, and thanks everyone. All the female dancers are weepy. His highlight package is run. Leah calls for final kudos for Corynne and Daniel, congratulates the top ten, thanks the guest judges… and we’re done! Wrapping Up For the rest of the series, new pairings are drawn out of a hat each week. Breaking in a new partner… yep, just another week at the studio for Austin! I was hoping Emanuel and Corynne would end up together at some point, but that’s not going to happen now. Who do you want to see partnered together? Let me know your thoughts at the address below!
