So You Think You Can Dance Canada 2, October 7: Tough Choicesby Brian Towers -- 10/08/2009
View Printable version of this article In this week’s Performance episode, the top eight dancers put on a great show, especially the women. For me, the highlight was Emanuel dancing despite a trip to the hospital, and Vincent’s solo. You can read my version of things here. Series host Leah Miller starts the process off by telling us that close to one-and–a-half million votes were cast last night. That’s an increase, though it’s less than the number of votes cast for CBC’s inane Battle of the Blades, so take that for what it’s worth. On the plus side, Leah’s hair is all slung to her right, except for one rogue strand, and it looks saucy. The group number leads off the show. It’s the promised rock-theatre number from Tyce Diorio from the musical “All Shook Up.” Centred about a motorcycle, it looks like great fun. After the number, Leah brings Tyce on stage for kudos. Leah moves right to the results. Like last week, the bottom two vote getters will dance tonight, although the results are predetermined solely by last night’s vote totals. Leah then introduces principal judges Jean Marc Genereux and Tré Armstrong, and their assistants this week, Mia Michaels and Dan Karaty. Leah calls for the four females to join her at centre stage, and we see video highlights of their performances from last night. Jayme Rae is addressed first. She is in the top six. Kim, who has never been in the bottom, is in the bottom now. That leaves Melanie and Tara Jean, who has never been at the bottom before, either. Tara Jean, who by-the-way looks very flapper-ish with her hair up… is safe, and once again, Melanie must dance later. It’s her fourth time in the bottom. Leah brings the men to centre stage, to repeat the process for them. First up is Cody, and he is not safe. Vincent has been in the bottom three times, but he does not have to solo tonight. This leaves Emanuel and Everett. Emanuel… is safe, and Everett will be dancing a solo in a few minutes. That new stuns Emanuel, who seems sure he was in trouble after the judge critiques last night, plus his injury that cost him some freedom of movement and precious rehearsal time. The women dance off first this week. Kim dances her hip-hop routine first. She’s hard-hitting, yet so sexy. Plus, I think we’re seeing some fresh, new moves from Kim! Melanie’s contemporary piece is okay, but I think I’ve seen some of these moves before. The men dance next. Cody’s smooth hip-hop shows surprising originality, and some of his puckish movements make me smile. One expects that Everett’s tap routine will be exciting, and he does not disappoint. The things he does with his ankles always amaze me. Maybe I’d write more about these solos, but as they don’t affect voting or results, they’re filler by definition, so nuts to that! Before Leah reads the results, she asks a judge for comments. Jean Marc tells both women that they are fantastic, and they should be proud of themselves. Leah delivers the news… Kim received the fewest votes, so she is going home. Melanie survives again! Kim thanks her supporters and says she looks forward to seeing what’s out there for her. We see video of Kim’s time on the show, then, back live, Kim says she will miss the dancing and the learning experience. Attention shifts to the men. Tré tells both they are wonderful dancers who deserve to be in the top six. Leah opens the envelope to report that Cody is eliminated, and Everett is in the top six. Cody says the smooth waltz was his favourite dance. He adds that he’s going to miss everyone. After his highlight package is run, he tells us the experience was so unreal he can’t describe it, and that he’s looking forward to the tour. Leah calls for final kudos for Kim and Cody, pimps the Top Ten tour, and next weeks show that will feature work by choreographer Mia Michaels. Leah goes on to thank the judges, encourage us to applaud for the top six. She then sheds a tear, and we’re done! Wrapping Up I had predicted one of the two bottom vote-getters (as I refused to call it for the women), and hit the evicted dancer. The choice was tough this week… and it’s going to get tougher.
