"I’ve Studied The Show; I Know How It Works" – RealityNewsOnline’s Exclusive Interview with America's Next Top Model 13’s Brittany

by Phil Kural -- 11/02/2009
Brittany was the ninth girl eliminated this season on America’s Next Top Model when the judges felt she just wasn’t consistent enough with her photos. Did Brittany feel she was consistent? What did she think about her edit? What’s with the quote above? Find out right here!

Brittany was always middle of the road for me. She was typically the girl that I forgot even existed on the show until they showed her saying something. Sure, they had her pegged as “the mathematician,” but I feel like that was rammed so far down our throats that we were choking on it! Brittany apparently felt the same way! As usual, I had a chance to talk with Brittany about her experience on the show, and I was pleased to find out that she not only was familiar with the show, but she knew her elimination was coming. Read on to see why!

RealityNewsOnline: Hey Brittany! Thanks for taking time out of your day to talk with me. How much of previous seasons had you seen and why did you decide to apply for the show?

Brittany: I started watching since the third cycle, when I was 16. I watched every single season up until a few cycles before my own. I always wanted to be on the show, but was never tall enough, obviously. I actually didn’t even look to be on the show. I was minding my own business and a casting director actually found my website, since I have done a lot of modeling in the past. They told me they were doing a cycle for shorter girls, and I had to think about it, since I was supposed to be graduating, but I went to the interview, and they had me go to San Francisco and do the whole casting thing. I went through the same things that every other girl went through, but I didn’t actually apply – I was recruited. Right place, right time.

RNO: The judges and the editors made it quite clear this season that you are a mathematician. Do you feel that had any impact on your modeling, or do you think it was just your niche this season?

Brittany: I think everyone on the show has a story, and plays a character, so to speak. They wanted me to be the mathematician, and it’s a huge part of my life since I teach math, I tutor, and I’m a math major. They brought it up way too much though, since especially I’ve spent my whole life trying to separate math and my modeling life. They really nailed it in that I’m a mathematician.

RNO: Watching this week’s episode, you came off pretty strongly on Erin with your comments in the confessional. Do you regret anything you said about her?

Brittany: It was definitely exaggerated a little. We said those things, but you have to realize that we are in interviews where we have to talk about the other girls. Erin and I were texting during last week’s show and we were both joking that we hated one another during that episode! It’s just interviews and some of it is pieced together. We all got annoyed by someone at one point.

RNO: Yes, but the question is do you regret what you said?

Brittany: I don’t regret what I said because at the time she was annoying me! I wasn’t the only one that made comments about Erin or any of the other girls, but you have to realize you only see a very brief snippet of what went on in the house. We were there a lot, and you get to see three minutes a week of it.

RNO: It’s funny. During your photo shoot this week I happened to notice that there was a Jay Manuel voiceover “telling you” to give more movement. Did you notice that at all and what did you think?

Brittany: I was shocked. I mean, I thought the photo shoot went well. We were losing light and I was the last one to go that day. I had like seven minutes, and by the second shot, I heard Jay say to Tyra that they got the shot. They kept taking them though, and Jay said that I was perfectly capturing the essence of the shoot and doing great. Tyra did say that it looked a little catalog and then I switched it around and they said it was fine. The shoot went so quick, and you can even tell during the episode when we finished and I asked, “That’s it?”

RNO: When I interviewed Ashley and Kara, I asked them if Bianca was really as “sneaky” as the editing led us to believe, and they both actually identified YOU as the sneaky girl to watch. Did you have any clue they viewed you that way?

Brittany: I had no idea. I remember my interviews in the house and them asking me what I thought the other girls thought about me. I had no clue though, and I thought I was respectful and nice to everyone. None of the girls ever said anything like that to my face – that they thought I was sneaky.

RNO: Another thing that Kara said to me was that the girls weren’t being edited the way she remembered them. Is that something you would agree with, or do you feel the editing has been spot on?

Brittany: It’s difficult for us being in the experience with so much going on. Again, you have to realize that they only air minutes of the house during each episode. It’s hard for them to break it down and the whole thing is frustrating. According to the editing, I sort of remember it the way they edited, but I’m smart enough to realize that it’s edited for TV, too.

RNO: It never felt through the season that you were in any danger of going home. Then, all of a sudden, you find yourself in the bottom two and being sent home. Where do you think it turned around for you?

Brittany: You know, I never felt like I was going downhill. As soon as I was in the bottom two back at the beginning of the competition, I won the runway challenge and got the first call out for the scarf challenge. I was going uphill! I was in the top three for about four weeks in a row. Then we go to Hawaii, and I did well on the surfboard, and I thought I did well in the photo shoot, so it really came out of nowhere. At that point, I don’t know if it was based off of other factors as far as who they wanted left on the show, and who would make it dramatic. I feel like they are always looking to shock the viewers, so maybe that’s why I was sent home.
