So You Think You Can Dance 6, November 11: Mad World

by Jenn Brasler -- 11/12/2009
This week’s performances were crazy, what with burgling ski bums, contemporary dancers not nailing a contemporary routine, and a white girl playing an African princess. Some people are mad in the sense of being crazy (or maybe that’s just the voters) and some are angry, either for being put in the bottom three or because certain other dancers are in the bottom three when they shouldn’t be. Where does Nathan (right) fit into all of this, and will he be having crazy nightmares tonight?

Last night 16 people danced. Tonight two of them will be sent packing. But first, group dance! The guys look like cavemen warriors, which fits with the song, Lloyd Banks’ “Warrior, Pt. 2.” The girls also look like cavepeople. Jakob and Legacy (I think) have some sort of dance battle. It’s a hip-hop routine but I can’t figure out who the choreographer is. Maybe Shane Sparks? The audience needs to stop screaming. Do it at the end, guys. Oh, and Dave Scott was the choreographer. Maybe now that Shane is so busy with America’s Best Dance Crew, we can get more Dave?

Cat reminds us of the deal tonight – three guys and three girls in the bottom, one of each goes home – and introduces the judges. Nigel thinks some people who ordinarily wouldn’t be safe will be thanks to the voters. He won’t name names, though. Cat asks Mary if she’s relieved that she doesn’t have to put people in the bottom three anymore. Well, no, but she still has to help pick who leaves. Cat asks Adam if the voters will get it right. Adam says yes because the point of the show is to pick America’s favorite dancer, not the best dancer. He warns that we might start seeing some “sketchy show.” Nigel says we’re at the stage where we’re sorting out the top ten, and then it’s all up to the voters.

Our first three couples out for results are Kathryn & Legacy, Victor & Channing, and Ellenore & Ryan. Ryan seems to be dressed like an extra from South Pacific, possibly in honor of Veterans Day. Last night he and Ellenore krumped somewhat respectably. They’re in the bottom three, and neither seems surprised. Adam isn’t either. He wishes they’d committed harder, but he’s excited to see them do their solos.

Channing & Victor, who were newly paired up this week, danced a contemporary piece. Despite it being their style, Nigel wasn’t impressed. Kathryn & Legacy did a Broadway piece by a guy who wasn’t Tyce. Legacy blew everyone away but Kathryn wasn’t quite as good, according to the judges. Channing & Victor are safe. I call fake-out. I bet Kathryn & Legacy are safe, too. They wouldn’t reveal two of the bottom-three couples in the first group, would they? Plus, Cat looks like she’s hiding something. She asks Legacy & Kathryn what they’re still doing there and sends them off to safety.

Dominic from Season 3 is testing some random people in Hollywood on their knowledge of dance moves. One girl knows two ballet moves but not what a bachacada is. Apparently it’s a Latin ballroom move and Dominic knows how to do it. Oh, crap, this whole thing was an ad! I feel so used.

Next for results are Jakob & Ashleigh (the latter of whom is dressed as a Pink Lady), Peter & Pauline, and Noelle & Russell. Gee, I wonder which pair will be in the bottom three? Ashleigh & Jakob did a jazz routine with a cane, and all three were great. No one’s surprised that they’re safe. Wow, for the first time all season, Ashleigh is doing better than Ryan. Peter & Pauline did a quickstep that was lacking in technique but full of personality. Russell & Noelle did an African jazz routine where he was a frog and she was an African princess. Noelle finally shined and Nigel called Russell a star.

Is anyone really shocked that Peter & Pauline are in the bottom three and Noelle & Russell are safe? Didn’t think so. Mary isn’t surprised either; Pauline & Peter didn’t find the magic last night and she hopes they can find it tonight.

We’re left with Karen & Kevin and Mollee & Nathan. Good call, whoever arranges these groups – I predict Mollee & Nathan in the bottom, but if their fans save them, Karen & Kevin are a possibility. The Ks did the hustle last night, and Karen got rave reviews once again, with Kevin getting his own positive feedback. Nathan & Mollee did a salsa that the judges didn’t like very much. America backed the wrong horses, as Mollee & Nathan are safe and Kevin & Karen are in the bottom three. The Ks are TICKED. Don’t worry, guys – the judges will probably save you.
