An “Insider” Look at Survivor: Samoa, Episode 9, Part 2 – “I Came in This Game Saying I’d Do Anything to Win”

by Teeuwynn Woodruff -- 11/19/2009
Another week, another blindside! This week the plots were flying as Russell found yet another immunity idol. What does Kelly have to say about her shocking ouster? Did she really have her head in the game? What does Russell think of Natalie’s (right) surprising rat smashing abilities? Look inside for the answers, Tribal Council comments, and more!

Kelly’s Final Words

Kelly starts by saying she is totally shocked and think it was a cheap shot to take her out like that – just because Russell thought she was playing too nice. “I came in this game saying I’d do anything to win.” Kelly says she didn’t end up having to do that. Kelly hopes Galu gets rid of Russell. “It’s two immunity idols – how many can there be? He’s just a little, sneaky man. His character is horrible from things he’s told me in the game about things he does in real life.”

Kelly says today was actually her roughest day out here, and now she’s out. She doesn’t know if she would do this again. She needs some time out first. “It was a total blindside. Everything was working out perfectly. I knew I was going to make it to the end… I’m totally shocked.” Kelly feels like Galu is playing the game fair. Foa Foa will soon be out of the game entirely.

Well, I think Kelly is blinded by her own allegiances here when she says Galu is playing the game fair and that it was a “cheap shot” for Foa Foa to take her out. Does Kelly think the former Foa Foa should just get out of Galu’s way? It’s clear she’s in shock, but Kelly comes across rather… lax here, considering what just happened to her. I still have the impression she was just going along in the game and not really playing it.

Kelly the Day After

“I went into this game thinking I’d be a little bit more of a strategic player,” Kelly begins. She figured she would slide by physically, but manipulate mentally. When she got in the game she realized she could just be genuine and honest. Even more surprising, Kelly actually did well in the challenges and had fun doing them.

“My biggest regret is voting out Erik. Almost immediately after we did it, we realized Erik was the wrong one to go. It should have been a Foa Foa.” Kelly says that the Galu thought they went into the merge with an 8-4 advantage, they actually only had a 7-5 advantage (presumably, due to Shambo’s switched allegiance).

Kelly thought she would be fine, physically, out here. But when you’re so exhausted and starving and doing the challenges it’s really hard to keep up the game. “When you haven’t eaten, you have no energy. Just walking over to talk to someone is draining. It was much more difficult than I thought.”

Kelly says she has no idea how the former Foa Foa hung on in the game considering how poorly they were doing. At least the Galu got the rewards and that helped a lot. “Even though we were getting wet, we had the blankets and we were together.”

Kelly says a huge part of this experience is being taken out of your comfort zone – in every way possible. You have to learn how to do everything on your own, and you have to rely on people you might not normally trust. Kelly says things back at home just won’t seem as hard now. Kelly wants to push herself harder in life now.

Everybody Loves Kelly

This interview takes place before the reward challenge. Kelly interviews that the reward challenge is exciting now. The individual challenges are fun. She’s really looking forward to the reward because it will be a feast and a getaway. Kelly says that everyone is telling her they will take her on reward if they win. “It seems like everyone’s going to take me if they win.” Kelly says she doesn’t know who she would take.

Kelly says she has always felt in a good position with Galu – and she still feels in a good position. “I get along with everyone.” Kelly feels like she’s in a good position in the game no matter how you look at it.

Ironically, the fact that Kelly did get along with everyone is what caused the former Foa Foa to pick her as their secondary target this week. So, Kelly’s position was a lot shakier than she really had any cause to imagine – at least at this point in the game.

Far From Civilized

Natalie interviews that she’s walking around with no shoes – like she’s wearing shoes. Her hair hasn’t really been watched in 23 days. “I can smell myself!” It’s getting disgusting. Kelly’s counting the days until she can shower, but she knows she will probably never have an experience like this again.

Natalie says around day 12, she was thinking, “What have I done? Why did I give my job up? I’m insane!” But Natalie decided to make the best of it. She says she is having a good time, but she is definitely going to savor her next meal!

Sounds like Natalie continues to maintain her good spirits despite having such a hard slog at Foa Foa. Natalie has made some key moves in this game, including being instrumental in getting the former Galu to vote out Erik, and she is really hanging in there. Good for her!
