“Some of the Guys in Our Tribe Fall for Their Crap” – RealityNewsOnline’s Exclusive Interview with Survivor Villain Randy

by David Bloomberg -- 02/26/2010
While we didn’t get to see much of it this time around, Randy still has his very dry sense of humor and his ability to make a great wisecrack, both of which come out in this interview. Why didn’t he fit in with the rest of his tribe? Did he know he was going? Why does he think they didn’t vote out Parvati instead? And what did the Villains know about Russell? Randy talks about all of this and more, right here!

RealityNewsOnline: Hello, Randy, and thanks for taking the time to talk to us here once again at RealityNewsOnline!

Randy: (In a very dry tone.) Like I said last year, they make us do it.

RNO: Last week, Stephenie told me about how she felt she was hurt in the game because she was not part of the Survivor scene, like many of the other players. Did you encounter something similar in your tribe?

Randy: Stephenie hit the nail on the head. I’m not going to even attempt to say it any better than that. If you’re not 28 and live in L.A. and go to Survivor parties, you’re going to be hurt in an all-star season. Stephenie has a life outside of Survivor like I do. It hurt me.

RNO: Is that why you didn’t ever feel like a part of the tribe, or was there more to it?

Randy: If I’d lived in L.A., going to all those parties, what happened out there wouldn’t have been any different. I’m 50 and getting along with Parvati, Courtney, and Danielle – no matter how hard I try, I’m not going to connect with those three. And some of the guys in our tribe fall for their crap.

RNO: Were you surprised at how they fell for that crap while at the same time warning themselves and one another not to fall for it, as we saw Thursday night?

Randy: Yeah, it’s frustrating. I didn’t see Russell making the deal with Parvati on Day 1 like we saw on TV. I went to him and said, “Do not fall for this. We watched Parvati get a million dollars from her smile a couple years ago. Don’t fall for that.” That could have been it for me on Day 1, saying that to Russell with that being his number one ally… if you can use the word “Russell” and “ally” in the same sentence. That’s why they choose girls that look good in a bikini to play Survivor. If things like didn’t happen, they would have a cast full of fat old women.

RNO: Last time we talked, you told me your original plan was to initially be a floater. Was that your plan again this season, or did you have a different strategy in mind going into the game?

Randy: I think I told you before I was going to rely on built-in conflicts out there. There are a lot of people out there with way bigger targets on their back. I was going to let those play out and hoping it would take me to about the jury and then I would start playing the game from there. I think one big factor last night was Sandra. Sandra is obviously a floater and it made sense for her to keep Parvati around because they’re both millionaires and I think that had a lot to do with it.

RNO: I thought the same thing you did before the game – that you wouldn’t be a major target and could make it to the jury, and I predicted that much. Unfortunately, it obviously didn’t turn out that way. Moving on, were you surprised Coach voted against you, given he indicated he'd do otherwise?

Randy: No, we all talked before. I knew I was a goner before we even went to that challenge. We talked about it and agreed. I said there’s no reason not to vote for me, I’m gone. Jerri was in my corner too, as was Tyson, going to bat for me. He did it in a different way, saying negative things about me, saying we don’t need to worry about Randy, he’s old and weak. When I saw that at first, I said, “You’re my friend!” Then I said of course, nice call, I’m no threat.

RNO: We didn’t get to see much of you and then, boom, you were gone. What did we miss?

Randy: Not much, just rewatch Gabon if you want to know what you missed. This season is not about me and I know that, and it became pretty clear on Day 1 out there. This is Rupert, James, Boston Rob – they’re big Survivor icons of the old days out there. People would rather watch Rupert roar than me rip somebody apart.

RNO: Did you get to see or hear anything about Russell before heading out to Samoa?

Randy: Not a word. I was told – and I assume we were all told – about him the night before we got on a plane or the night we got on a plane. There’s a guy from Season 19, his name is Russell, he impressed the producers, he’s going to be out there. We did not know if he was a hero or a villain until we were there. That being said, you could look at the guy and know he was a villain. How many nice guys do you know that are five-foot-two and wear a hat like that?

RNO: What did he tell you and the rest of the tribe about his season and why he was deemed to be a Villain?

Randy: He was not allowed to tell us anything about his season. Of course we knew he wasn’t first voted out or he wouldn’t be there. We didn’t know if he won or he was mid-jury. He didn’t tell me anything, whether or not he told anybody else I don’t know.

There are two kinds of villains – there is the villain like Boston Rob that will screw you over in a heartbeat and there’s villains like Coach and myself who are kind of loyal villains. All we do is speak the truth and sometimes the truth is ugly. That’s why I gave Russell the benefit of the doubt – he may have been a villain like me. But if we’d known, pouring out water and burning people’s socks and stuff like that, I think you’d probably be talking to him right now.

RNO: Speaking of which, we saw Russell hide the machete, but didn’t see much reaction at camp. What did people think happened to it and did it cause much strife, like Russell thought it would?

Randy: We’ll probably see some of that next week. It was a foregone conclusion that I was being voted out before the machete went missing. So if they want to blame me, I’m not sure how good that strategy is. The guy who supposedly destroyed the machete and threw it in the ocean is already gone. They can’t vote me out twice.

When I watch something that happens in Survivor, I ask myself if this person would be doing this if the game wasn’t on TV. Hiding the machete and pouring out water, that’s not Survivor, that’s not playing the game, that’s getting airtime. That’s his business, but I don’t approve of it.

RNO: I know you’ve indicated in various pre-show interviews that you left behind your negative feelings about Sugar. But last time we talked, you told me, “She’s gotten the golden edit this year, making her out to be America’s sweetheart.” What did you think of her very brief edit this time around?

Randy: The anti-Gabon edit. I wish Sugar the best and hope she gets her life together. Let me say Sugar is not as cute and wonderful as she was portrayed in Gabon and she’s probably not as useless and stupid as she was portrayed this year.

RNO: We’re about out of time. So is there anything else you’d like to tell us about your time on Survivor?

Randy: Nothing that I’m allowed to tell you. I guess I can tell you I chipped two teeth out there and had a root canal and have been sick since I’ve been out there – and it’s been several months. Just a warning to people applying – it’s not all glitz and glamour. My toilet paper bill is going through the roof, I’d better win fan favorite to pay for it.

RNO: Well, on that note, we’ve got to go. Thanks again, Randy!
