Murder in Small Town X: The Art of Misdirection

by Jeffrey Clinard -- 07/10/2002
Is the killer using the art of misdirection to frame another suspect? Is Lambert the killer or the target?

Episode 6 featured two main paths: the Mind/Science "cleansing" and the Prudence Connor track. Both of them cleared up some side issues, but the killer is becoming increasingly obvious with the little things that were revealed.

First, the death of G.D. I'm having to back off from my last analysis. I thought that he should have been bang-sticked or not at the scene. I now believe I erred. The killer was caught at the scene, and bashed him because he didn't have his bang stick. Later, he had it and finished the job. G.D. was an accidental victim of the Sunrise Killer.

Start with the Mind/Science track. The Fox web site said that the mystery of the sweepers was a clue. Uh, well, I had figured that out by the end of episode two, and if I had bothered to check the web site before then I'd have known after episode one. I made a partial mistake in my reasons for them sweeping. I assumed it was symbolic. It is, but the main reason was to misdirect the naive. If they had been wearing trenchcoats and fedoras, they would have screamed "spy" and everybody would wonder who they were working for. Instead, they sweep, and people I know have asked the question of "Why do they sweep?" I immediately ignored the window dressing and the truth was simple.

Going on with the Mind/Science track, we now known Rusty and Mary Elizabeth are high-ups in this cult. Nice, but evidence of nothing in particular. Everything was pretty much window dressing and a test of the investigators’ dedication to getting to the General. They succeeded, and we get the truth behind the $250,000. I had mentioned before that land was the only high dollar value purchase item. And we also know where it went as well, though that ties into the other track.

Connor and Jimmy conspired to blackmail Nate Flint. He paid them off with the money he got for the pending sale of the land. He kept it secret so as to hide it from his family. I also believe it clears Jimmy and Prudence; blackmailers have every reason to keep their target alive for future "contributions." Of course, the General, with his army of sweepers, see and hear everything. Mind/Science blew up the Connor houseboat as a warning. The General intends to get that money back. He won't, but only because he's dead.

Angel and Kristen blew the audio surveillance of the cabin on Dog Island, but they were cut a break later to get that information. Face it, somebody has some phones tapped. The killer knew when and where to strike and kill General Hayden DeBeck.

Now for the little things. Frank got canned for his articles on the scams Lambert has pulled before. Frank has set up Lambert before, accusing him of the killings in the $2 Bills party. He's trying to focus the team on Lambert as the killer. In fact, I believe he's doing his best to frame him.

An unanswered question is what happened at Trekkers and why. Without more evidence, this question is a mystery.

Samantha Larabee is cleared, but this is about as useless as the rest of the cleared suspects. There are only a few main players in this drama, and she was never a major part of it.

The arson/Duchamp cover-up theory holds a lot of water, though there are a few missing pieces. First, why Nate Flint and his family instead of C.R. Flint, a perpetrator? General DeBeck was tackled head on. Interestingly enough, I've already answered that question when I provided my thoughts on Samantha Larabee. If C.R. Flint was killed first, the Flint money would go into limbo. But, if Nate, Carmen, and Abby are out of the way, a path is provided for the fortune; the possibility C.R. Flint will leave it all to Samantha Larabee. She's a cleared suspect, but the father of her baby his not. In fact, Frank's wife has left him and he has romantic ties to Samantha. C.R. Flint is a dead man walking, and the final target of the Sunrise Killer – Frank Kovick, by birth, Frank Duchamp.

The killer clues all fit now. The tape of the Burnt Man and the Duchamp relating to the events of 1941 and 1971. The sardine fingers, the Bonnie-Rose, and the Mind/Science logo are representative of the three men who were responsible for the Burnt Man. Flint’s fingers pointing at their sardine factory. The Bonnie-Rose; Oscar Blodgett's boat. The Mind/Science logo, pointing to General DeBeck.

The question remains; can the investigators put it all together and claim the reward... or will Chief Duncan or Gary Fredo have to solve the case for them?
