Fashion Star, Episode 3: Suddenly So Last Summer

John says Nikki’s jumpsuits were not executed right. Jessica has a crush on Nzimiro and his “Hamptons party in the pants.” John gives Sarah credit for going outside of her comfort zone, but he does not love the prints. Jessica disagrees vehemently.

What about the buyers? Sarah wants offers from all three stores, but once again, only H&M offers $50,000. Nikki Christie believes this is her store’s glam trend for this summer. Nikki Poulos, as expected, loses all three stores gets a $50,000 offer from Macy’s. Caprice says they will work on the fit, but she loves the color and Nikki’s effort in getting out of her swimsuit box. Really? Nzimiro also gets a $50,000 offer from H&M, since Nikki C. finds the design as the perfect split between short and swim trunk. I really know nothing about fashion.

Luciana Someone, Lisa Vian Hunter, and Ross Bennett all receive tough critiques from the judges. Nicole wants to see Ross do something less focused on Texas girls. He opts for a double-pleated trouser short, and he thinks the mentors will be shocked. Lisa and Luciana ignore the mentors and are ignored by the buyers. Ross, however, gets a bidding war between Macy’s and H&M, with Macy’s winning with $120,000. The floral print is a win for Caprice, and the montage is over. This means we still know absolutely nothing about that Lucy Anna person, or whatever her name is.

We’re up to the last group. Edmond Newton works on a maxi dress in three variations. He says he grew up in the South, so he uses the airy dresses he would often see as an inspiration. Jessica thinks Edmond is good at design, but not so much at fabric choice. She wants a day-to-night look. Lizzie Parker almost got cut last week. As a suburban tattooed heavy metal fan, Lizzie is incorporating the music genre into her designs.

Kara Laricks is happy to go from the bottom to the top. She says she was once a closeted lesbian teacher, so now can be true to herself as a designer. Kara works on tuxedo pants, which may be a bad choice due to her proclivity towards the anti-summer color of black. John shows her an ivory swatch. It scares her at first, but she decides that lighter colored pants are the way to go.

Another fashion show, another dance tune I can’t name. This time, an aerialist is commanding all the attention. Edmond’s maxi dresses are first, and I’m bored. Thank you, random aerialist, for keeping me interested. The color on Kara’s tuxedo pants may be a little more late summer, but what do I know? I still like these pants, though. I can see the heavy metal influence in Lizzie’s sheath dresses, but again, unless one is Tetsuya Nomura, superfluous zippers don’t work.

Elle asks Kara about not going for a print, to which Kara responds with a focus on the color-blocking trend. John thinks Kara chose great colors for the season. Nicole thinks this is the first time Lizzie stepped outside of her comfort zone, but this is not Nicole’s favorite look. Nicole loves maxi dresses and Edmond’s headbands.

Kara’s pants get dropped by Macy’s and H&M, but Saks bids $50,000. Terron calls the pants very sophisticated, and he believes Kara herself has evolved beautifully from those silly collars seen in the first episode. Lizzie loses all three buyers again. Nikki questions the placement of the zippers. Similarly, Edmond goes bid-less. Terron does not like the color choices, especially the sky blue.

Among the six rejected designers, three (Ronnie, Barbara, and Luciana) have yet to receive any offers. I’d be shocked to see Luciana leave, simply because we haven’t seen Luciana yet. There is a chance that Lizzie or Edmond could go, but I’d personally send home Ronnie.

The buyers’ bottom three are Lizzie, Luciana, and Edmond. Ronnie gets another pass. Sigh. Jessica is excited and nervous to announce the designer getting saved this week. The up-and-coming designer getting another chance is… Edmond. Really? Goodbye, Lizzie.

Caprice is concerned that Lizzie doesn’t have the range to design for all three stores. Nikki sees Luciana’s effort every week, but she hasn’t hit the mark or gone past her Miami aesthetic yet. How are we supposed to know this, exactly? Who is this Luciana person? The designer going home is… Lizzie. I thought so. Why would Luciana go home without anyone knowing who the heck she even is?
