New Reality Show to Address Post-September 11 Actionsby Susan Schechter -- 07/10/2002View Printable version of this article Sometimes real life does echo reality. The Tiffany network, aka CBS, has decided to air a new reality show for midseason. This is no biggie, all the networks add new shows in the new year. But this story coming from the Associated Press news wire really got my attention. Reality TV is enlisting in the military. No, this is not like Fox’s Boot Camp -- this is going to be a bit more dramatic and real. And there will be no prizes awarded, as far as this reporter can see. American Fighter Pilots is going to be the first new TV series that addresses America’s post-September 11 actions against terrorism in more than a one-shot fashion. In a press release, CBS is describing this new series as a "Top Gun like reality series." It will follow fighter pilot trainees at work and at home, with footage shot for some 18 months before the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington DC. "Many of the pilots," CBS says, "are now part of the U.S. anti-terrorist war." The network also said, "They are being interviewed abroad about their experiences during the current world situation." Glen Maynard, the development executive at CBS, stated, "We feel that American Fighter Pilots fulfils the desire of today’s audiences for patriotic fare that is both exciting and entertaining." No air date has been provided, nor has the number of episodes been released, but the show’s executive producers include Tony Scott, who directed the 1986 hit film "Top Gun", with Tom Cruise, Kelly McGuinness, and Anthony Edwards.
