Popstars 2, Episode 10: Hello Worldby Lisa Jacobs -- 07/10/2002
View Printable version of this article This week (well, technically the previous week since I was not able to put this summary together right away), the kids from Scene 23 hit the road. They’re off for a weeklong publicity tour, but not before they are each granted a copy of their new CD. It’s all squeals and excitement as well as patting each other on the back. Monika and Dorothy congratulate Laurie for looking like “a star” on the album (but no one mentions the fact that her teeth were digitally straightened). First stop on the press tour is a performance on L.A.’s crappy little local KTLA morning news show (they say it’s the number one local morning news show … yeah, number one out of TWO local morning shows). Josh complains they’ve only done the song one time before and that it’s too early for him to sing in the right octave. But they only have to lip sync, so I don’t see what the problem is. Next up is a round of TV, radio, and internet interviews, but the kids are just happy to be out of the house after being kept in seclusion for four and a half months. They are totally unprepared for the first time they get to meet their SCREAMING fans at a Wet Seal record signing. They were just hoping twenty people to show up, but they are overwhelmed to see hundreds of SCREAMING fans. Josh is funny when he says, “I thought Brad Pitt was behind me,” and Dorothy is cute when the number of fans and their excitement makes her cry. They are in shock. Donavan is floored when a DJ from KGGI compliments him on the song he wrote for the album called “Respect.” “I got a pair of satin panties,” says Josh, as they get ready to depart. Ha! Then it’s off to the Big Apple for another round of publicity, including an appearance on Regis & Kelly. But the kids make time to meet their biggest fan. Joanne’s e-mail was picked out of many submissions and won her chance to meet Scene 23. She and her friend Jenna break down in tears outside the group’s door. Then it’s off to perform on Regis & Kelly. Tony is nervous for them, but is relieved when the kids do great. Laurie gets Regis’ autograph and Josh gets to hug Kelly, then it’s off to more rehearsals for their upcoming concert … but the kids get a shock when their practice is crashed by some old friends: Jackie, Greg, Lian, and Angel from the L.A. Workshop walk in and send Scene 23 into hysterics. There are lots of hugs and screaming, but the meeting is bittersweet for the four that didn’t make the group. Minnesota is the next stop. Four thousand fans pack the Mall of America to see Scene 23 perform a mini-concert – the biggest turn-out ever for a band at the country’s largest mall. Again, it seems like they’re lip-syncing, but the sound might have been bad in the mall (or the singing might have been bad) so they fixed it in post. But I enjoyed the kids in the upper levels mimicking the Scene 23 dances. The group is happy with their performance and are optimistic about their future. Monika says, “There’s no place for this group to go but up.” Well … not technically, but here’s hoping she’s right. NEXT WEEK: The end of the road … The Popstars 2 CD is available now!
