Combat Missions, Episode 3: A Major Truck-Upby Charlie Reneke -- 07/10/2002
View Printable version of this article This week, it's the undefeated Bravo vs. the undefeated Delta. Both teams ooze with confidence is their respective bunks. Delta teams members have no doubt that they are the best team out there. Meanwhile, Rudy has no doubt that Delta's Scott Helvenston is a loud mouth. Rudy lets him know that his tirade against his teammates following episode 2's Tank Takeout was crossing the line, and that he can be replaced if Rudy sees fit. There are two contests to earn bonus points this time. The first one is a weapons assembly contest. Bravo, which is composed of mostly SWAT Cops, knows that they are in danger of losing this one, because they have no experience assembling some of the military weapons. They actually get off to a blazing start, with Delta falling way behind. Then, Steve Claggett of Bravo gets stuck on an assault rifle and his team never recovers. 25 points to Delta. Next up, the Gauntlet. Team members must maneuver past members of the other team, using giant pillows to push them off a grid and into water. Bravo tries first. Scott Helvenston of Delta is still a loud mouth, and begins yelling asinine comments like, "You can tell they have no military training." In the end, Delta wins easily, and takes another 25 points. Things are looking bad for Bravo... really bad. Teams are briefed on the mission. It's hostage rescue this week. Teams will wait for a truck with the #13 on it, which contains the hostage. Kill the Shadow Squad, rescue the hostage, etc. Bravo, is actually smart enough to ask "Will there be other trucks?" Yep, there sure will be. Bravo is up first. Instead of engaging the truck along the road, they decide to do so at the checkpoint it must pass through. The first truck they see is #23. They don't attack. They then see #13. They kill all the Shadow Squad guys and rescue the prisoner. Their final time: Ninteen minutes. Number of Bravo guys killed: Zero. This mission looked a tad bit too easy. Delta is up. They also decide to engage the truck at the checkpoint. To bad they didn't pay attention to numbers. They attack the truck that is labeled #23 and, to make a long story short, everyone on the team is killed and the mission is a total failure. As if there was any doubt, Bravo won. The worst part about Combat Missions is the voting process, where players aren't actually required to vote. Sigh. This week was another dopey finish like episode one's. Delta team leader Rod Teeple accepts blame for the loss, and discharges himself. Damnit! This show was very, very dull this week, but it would have all balanced out if that ass Scott got voted out. Instead, Rod puts his own torch out and Delta gets a guy named George Ciganik. End of show. Next week, Alpha vs. Clank in a battle of the losers!
