Who Wants to Box on Fox?

by Susan Schechter -- 07/10/2002
I guess it's not quite "reality" TV, but Fox is having another one of its "specials." This time, celebrity newsmakers (who didn't generally make news for good reasons) are going to participate in three-round boxing matches. Included are Danny Partridge, Paula Jones, and Tonya Harding -- but NOT Amy Fisher.

Since I am a news junkie and wannabe reporter here at RNO, I like to find breaking stories, and report on them. Last week I saw a blurb in the New York Post about Fox and wrestling, I figured everyone knew about it. After all, two of the contestants were Greg Brady and Danny Partridge. I was wrong. What made news here in New York did not play in the rest of the country.

So this morning, my Post was delivered and I noticed the Page Six headline:

AMY SET TO SUE AS PAROLE BOARD KOS BOXING BID

Well, the only Amy I can think of is Amy Fisher. This must be about the upcoming Fox special. So, humming to myself, “Amy, whatcha going to do?” (great song, by the way), I read the article.

Amy Fisher, for those who may have been asleep at the wheel or just don’t live in the New York tri-state area, is a young woman from Long Island who went to jail for several years for shooting the wife of a guy named Joey Buttafuoco she was having an affair with. The press called her the “Long Island Lolita,” after the girl in Nabakov’s novel.

The upside of the story is that Mary Jo Buttafuoco did not die. That is about the only good thing in this story. She still lives with pain from the attempt. Joey, her husband, became a minor celeb around here, appearing on Howard Stern’s radio show.

This past Sunday night, while watching The Simpsons on Fox, I saw the commercial for the show. Amy Fisher was going to fight Tonya Harding on a show to be broadcast next week. Among other celeb contestants are Greg Brady and Danny Partridge (well, the guys who played these two). Uh oh. The third couple is Ice T and an unnamed contestant.

Today the Post is breaking another story – Amy won’t be fighting. And there is a story within a the story- Amy is also a mother. How did that happen? [Editor’s Note: Er, maybe somebody should talk about the birds and the bees to Susan…].

But I digress. The Post reports that Fisher’s attorney said, “For reasons that they did not make clear to me or Ms. Fisher, they refused to allow her to engage in perfectly lawful behavior to earn money to help support her child. We're extremely disappointed in their decision and believe that they have acted in an arbitrary and capricious manner. … They said that she can't do any media for money."

I guess this violates the State of New York’s “Son of Sam” laws, which were set up to prevent convicted criminals from making any money off their crimes. Again, I may be wrong, this is my gut feeling.

Instead Paula Jones, yes Paula Jones, will be fighting ex-figure skater Tonya Harding. Paula Jones told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette her only fear is for her nose job. Well, I guess once you have no pride left, your nose would be the most important feature.

Among other people asked to participate for this special was Rick Rockwell, the “millionaire” from that great Fox hit, Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire. Apparently he was asked to fight Joey Buttafuoco.

Rockwell told the Post he refused the offer, noting sarcastically, "I can't think of any better way to restore my credibility than to . . . box Joey Buttafuoco." Well, at least one person is concerned about credibility!

The show will air on March 13, on Fox. Of course you can check back here afterwards for our usual witty commentary.

Susan would like to say that she won’t be watching this show. Nothing personal to Fox, but she would rather read a book. Or a good newspaper.
