Why Gina Lostby David Bloomberg -- 07/10/2002
View Printable version of this article The rumors were true – Gina is gone. She was sacrificed to the altar of Rotu after Kathy led them around blindly in the maze. And, as always, it’s time to take a look at What Marquesan Survivors Should Have Learned to see what Gina did wrong or right. Most importantly, why did Gina lose? The first key is plotting and scheming. While she was with the original Maraamu, it didn’t seem that she did a whole lot of this. She had her pal, Hunter, but that was about it. The slackers quickly took over the tribe and got rid of anybody who was either weird or a worker. She was left alone, helpless – until the switch. She did make it quite clear to her new tribemates that her old ones were worthless. It helped that Sarah lived down to the description and the new Maraamus saw it for themselves. So she managed to plot Sarah’s demise. But that was about it. After it became Love Tribe 2, nobody did any plotting or scheming. When Kathy tried to discuss the upcoming vote, Gina wanted nothing to do with it. She seems to have simply decided to leave it up to Paschal and Neleh. Although Kathy thought Gina was trying to work her way into a friendship with those two, I really don’t think plotting had much (if anything) to do with it. She was just, well, being friendly. Should she have tried? Well, considering the outcome, it certainly couldn’t have hurt! Obviously we can skip the bit about scheming and plotting too much or backstabbing. As far as pretending to be nice, well, we’ve kind of covered that already. Gina did a bit of pretending in the original Maraamu just so she wouldn’t be too obviously against the slackers. But after Hunter was voted off, even that pretense dropped. Once she got a new tribe, it seemed that she really didn’t have to pretend. Still, even as she formed a family-like bond with the other new Maraamus, she didn’t allow those emotions to control her to the point of it interfering with the game. Now, one might say she kind of stopped playing the game once Sarah was gone, but even so, it still stands. Frankly, she might have been able to use a little bit of emotion. It might have helped her to point out to Paschal/Neleh just who led them to defeat in the immunity challenge and just who put out the fire they needed to cook dinner and just who the bossy one was. I suspect Paschal and Neleh voted according to what they thought the best strategy for the merge would be, but I think they could have been convinced otherwise. But Gina never even tried from what we saw. Gina certainly didn’t have to worry about the sixth rule, regarding providing food and not being lazy. Of course, in the mirror universe that was original Maraamu, being lazy was good. Still, once she was in a tribe of reasonable people, they saw who was lazy and who wasn’t, and the lazy one got the boot. So what about Paschal, Neleh, and Kathy? Did they vote out the right person? Well, it’s hard to say. They know the merge is coming and they have to prepare for it. So at this point they should be targeting strong contenders, if there are any. In this crew, there really weren’t. But they also need to pick off people from competing alliances. If they were thinking in terms of strategy, Gina was indeed the best bet to go. She was the only original Maraamu left in Love Tribe 2, and whatever she might have said about the other original Maraamu, it was still possible they could join together after a merge – you just never know. Better to keep the original Rotu together just in case. There really is not a good answer to this one. But they had to vote off somebody. The obvious decision was to get rid of the person who had not been with them as long. This decision was apparently made all the easier because Gina didn’t try to convince Paschal and Neleh otherwise. Combine these two things together and you have your answer as to why Gina lost.
