Big Brother 3: Why Lori Lost

by David Bloomberg -- 07/10/2002
Lori was just supposed to be nominated because they needed to have two people. She was never supposed to actually take the fall -- that was going to be Marcellas. So what happened? Why did Lori lose?

As many readers know, for Survivor I write both recaps and an additional column looking at why each person lost after they’ve been voted off. (And eventually why the winner won.) For that show, I base it on an article I write at the beginning of each season listing some key points the players should have known going into it. Well, for BB3 I don’t have that opening article, but I still think it can be interesting to see why each player lost. With this in mind, let’s take a look at why Lori lost.

The first key point is that Lori was not in the original Gang of Six. While she was hanging out in the tree trying to win some money, the first three couples conspired to get rid of Marcellas. Ah, but they needed somebody to put up against Marcellas. While Josh originally volunteered, he soon recalculated the vote count and realized they needed to put up somebody from outside the alliance. And, since it was the very beginning, they needed to find somebody who seemed like they wouldn’t take it personally. Well, ya know, that Lori seems nice enough. Let’s put her up. She won’t hold it against us. And we can rest assured that everybody will vote against Marcellas instead of her. Wow, what a great strategy.

In fact, it was such a great strategy that it seemed like a rerun of Big Brother 2, where Chill Town put up the well-liked and easygoing Sheryl against their target Nicole. We all know how well that worked – but apparently the Group of Six did not know. You know how they say that those who do not understand history are doomed to repeat it? I give you Exhibit 1.

The Group of Six thought they were all so smart, but then Gerry got a conscience and abandoned them – taking their target, Marcellas, with him. Oh, sure, maybe they couldn’t have predicted that there would be a new twist like the veto power, but even without it, there were already rumblings from several people that they might not vote with the alliance. Still, with the veto, Lori was left against Amy.

Now what? Does the alliance vote out Amy, who they had planned to toss soon anyway? Indeed, Amy had been one of the original six, but had been quickly replaced by Roddy, though she didn’t (and perhaps still doesn’t) know it. Or do they vote out Lori? Well, Lori helped make the decision for them as she became ever more emotional, as evidenced by the way she reacted to the whole hand-washing issue with Gerry. That gave them all the excuse they needed to vote against her (except for, surprisingly, Josh, who stuck with the promise he gave her earlier).

Would they have voted against her anyway, given that main target Marcellas was gone? It’s really impossible to say. I suspect they would have, just to show who is in charge. Besides, she didn’t seem as interested in playing in all their reindeer games, while Amy had moved more into the group.

In the end, Lori lost because she was a sacrifice put up by an alliance that was formed solely on the basis of first impressions and who had to go to the bathroom (and thus come down from the tree). She was not meant to be the target, but because those in control of the nominations made the same mistakes we saw last year, she was the first evictee. That is why Lori lost.
