Big Brother 3: A Game of Chaos Theory

by Jeffrey Clinard -- 08/03/2002
In many reality TV shows, there is an obvious (and sometimes not-so-obvious) strategy. However, has Big Brother 3 added so many different twists and turns that it has resulted in chaos? One small move can send shudders throughout the house and completely change the plans of everybody involved. How can you make predictions or strategy in that situation?

Michael Crichton once wrote about a theme park that went amok... too much trust in technology, and then the park backfired, and the exhibits went out of control. It was turned into a film.

The film was NOT Jurassic Park. The film was Westworld, and with only a few modifications, it became the book and movie of Jurassic Park, and then its sequel of The Lost World (I will not comment on Jurassic Park 3 or Westworld 2... Crichton bailed out on those, and was wise to do so).

From all of that, the key concept was Chaos Theory. Similarly, the Big Brother 3 house is a zoo, with (originally) 12 human exhibits. All of them were put together with a cash prize (and whatever they could get on the side) in front of them. The producers introduced more elements: Head of Household, veto power, food competitions... and maybe even something else (perhaps switching evicted houseguests for some of the remaining)?

Yes, Big Brother 3 is a zoo with so many unpredictable elements I won't even try to predict a winning strategy. It's a game of social politics, but there are so many monkey wrenches in it, there is no real way to play the game. The best any HoH can do when nominating is to put up two people and not care which one gets evicted... and have a backup plan for a replacement nomination. The best any holder of Veto power can do is make a deal with a nominee to get himself or herself some protection in exchange for the use of it. In the end, the game was rigged for conflicts of many sorts, and we have already seen it... the Group of Six (and that revolving door), the guys verses the gals, the couples, the anti-couples.

In short, Big Brother 3 is based on personal relationships, not strategy or power structures.

In the past, I've tried to mastermind a few other reality TV shows, such as Survivor, The Mole, and The Amazing Race. I've given advice for the remaining Survivors, put myself in the position of the Mole, and tried to Think Smart for the Amazing Race contestants. I will continue to do so. These are games which have definite strategies to be followed.

What is the smart thing for Gerry to do? My answer is to destroy a couple. Roddy verses Chiara, or Eric verses Lisa. The other point is to tell the others that if a nomination is vetoed, he doesn't care. He'd just put up another member of those four in the place of the vetoed. So, for example, if Eric and Lisa were off the block, and Lisa won veto, she could veto Chiara, only to find that Eric was put up for nomination instead. Ouch.

Overall, what is the situation? Two couples (Eric & Lisa plus Chiara & Roddy, a master-mind who THINKS he has a solid male alliance {Josh}), Gerry, Marcellas, and the best kept secret of the game (Jason and Danielle).

Chaos theory is just too unpredictable. I have no idea who will stay, who will go, and who will win.
