The Big Brother 3 Live Feeds: A Different Side of the Houseguestsby Susan Schechter -- 08/12/2002
View Printable version of this article Well I finally did it. This past Wednesday I did what I had been saying I would do since February. I bit the bullet, I just took the plunge. I bought a new laptop. Mind you, I wanted the most perfect laptop available since it would be used for two primary things. The internet, and my writing. I am still trying to figure out Windows XP, and yes, I lost my bookmarks and e-mail addresses - but now I can watch Big Brother live feeds without the computer crashing. All is right with the world. Maybe it was a dumb thing to do, to pay $24.95 to watch this. I have to clean the apartment. I get up, to do so, and hear something interesting on the live feed. I watch. And I learn, if I put it always on top, I can write and watch at the same time. Thank heaven for spell checker. None of the things I have to do are getting done. My favorite reality show is BB, and I am in BB Heaven. For those who haven't seen the feeds yet, its pretty simplistic. There are four live feeds you can watch, one feed at a time. There isn't a lot of difference between the four channels. One has two houseguests in the HoH room. One has a long shot of the bed, and one is from the side. The voice is the same. Earlier today one camera was on Jason brushing his teeth for a very long time. The other camera was on Joshie in the backyard shuffling cards. I guess he didn't feel like playing solitaire. The biggest pain with the live feeds is if you go to do something and don't click on the Real Player you get bumped off every half hour. So what is happening in the house, and what is the difference between what we see on TV and on the feeds? A lot. And nothing. It is hard to describe. The live feeds pretty much allow us to be voyeurs - right now as I write I see Marcellas and Gerry doing the laundry in the back yard. Its almost midnight here but it is still sunny there in La La Land. Marcellas and Gerry are talking about the women being horny - and Gerry makes a comment that would never be on TV. It is an open and frank discussion of "that time of the month," with both Marcellas and Gerry discussing their wives and female friends. Ah! So that is why the girls spent a good chunk of the day in their beds! I understand! I guess Big Brother does not provide Midol! But when that is all said and done, it is strategy, who you are going to vote for, who do you think will get veto. It goes on and on and on and on… yeah. Yawn. It is neat to see the cameras move from room to room. It is neat to watch the houseguests do something as banal as prepare supper. The camera goes to close-ups of Josh cooking that are like watching the Food Channel, and Danielle talking about how rare it is to find a man who cooks. Yes, that is a the baby spoiler. Josh does not voluntarily leave the house. It looked like he may have from Saturday's show, but sorry folks he stays despite the conniption he pulled on the show. Besides, if he had left, you'd have already heard about it here. In fact, the others are very sympathetic for the guy. It is weird to see a voiceless Big Brother come over the speakers and say things like, "Chiara, put on your microphone" or "Lisa please come to the diary room." It's almost like Max Headroom has come back from where he came, with just his voice. The houseguests are interesting. This is where they can shine, because they are doing things that probably won't make it to TV. Like the communal eating. The discussions. They become less flat, more human. We really get to see what goes on in their heads. Jason and Roddy have me in stitches. Jason describing radio and wanting to be a DJ. They do a fake radio show. CBS shows us how booksmart Roddy is, but never Jason. Jason is very smart, much sharper than anyone gives him credit for. In fact, Jason is dang funny! His imitations of Big Brother are hysterical. Why don't we see more of this boy on TV? So is Marcellas. And the houseguests keep whining about the other guests being in Mexico. How this one looked, how that one looked. How they wish they knew they would be exiled to somewhere that nice and what will happen to them when they are leaving? Who will come back and how will they come back? (America wants to know the answer to that too!) Meanwhile, I cannot stop watching. Well, so much for this. It is past midnight. I just lost the live stream. I am going to bed. But I know I will be up in a few to watch this. I cannot stop. And one more day without doing anything but watching.
