Big Brother 3: Why Josh Lost

I’m tempted to make this a very short article and say that Josh lost because almost every other player in the Big Brother 3 house overdosed on stupid pills just before the vote. That is, after all, one obvious explanation. But instead let’s look at the entire situation.

Josh came in with a strategy to be the type of person you’d like to be up against in the finals. This is, frankly, the same type of strategy that won the game for Will last year. But Will had something that Josh didn’t have – control. He knew when to lie and when to rat somebody else out. He always kept the game in focus. Josh has acted paranoid. He would run from person to person, asking what they are going to do. He lied for no reason, such as at the very beginning of the show when he said he was a substitute teacher and then privately cackled with glee because Gerry bought into his lie.

He may have had the plan of Will, but he had more of the personality of Mike Boogie. People just didn’t like him.

All of this said, he still almost pulled it off – at least for this time. According to Julie Chen, if the vote had been taken a couple days before the actual vote, he would have won and I would be writing “Why Roddy Lost.” It isn’t completely clear what happened in those two days, though.

As each player went to vote, they acknowledged that it would be better for them strategically to eliminate Roddy now that they have the chance. But then, one by one, they voted against Josh instead. Why?

I wish I knew. But I can speculate. I think it may be partly to do with Marcellas’ intense dislike for him. Danielle and the others might not have wanted to alienate Marcellas. Also, Josh kept running around from person to person asking about the vote. This may have annoyed them enough to change their minds. Finally, they did all promise Chiara that they would support Roddy, and they may have been afraid violating that promise could come back to haunt them later.

Top all of this off with the idea that Chiara could not win HoH this time, so it was, in theory, all of them against Roddy – they may have figured they had a good chance to get both Roddy and Chiara on the block next time, and they could always take care of him then. Going back to Will, though, this is how he stayed week after week. However, this isn’t “Why Roddy Will Win,” so we won’t dwell on that point.

If we go back in time a bit further, Josh was put into the position of being nominated because he lied to Chiara about Lisa – and was caught. Chiara wanted him out, so she put him up against Roddy after securing the aforementioned promises that people would vote against Josh.

So it comes back to his lies. In this case, he might have had a good reason to lie – he wanted Lisa out. But it seems to never have occurred to him that Chiara might check up on him – that he might be found out. When you spend 24 hours a day, seven days a week cooped up with the same people, they are bound to find out things like this. If you tell one person, it is likely everybody will soon know, except in the most absolute secret cases (such as the Danielle/Jason alliance).

In the end, Josh lost because he tried to be Will, but simply couldn’t pull it off. Well, that and the stupid pill overdose that I mentioned above…
