American Idol: More Reactions to Tamyra’s Loss

by David Bloomberg & RNO Readers -- 08/22/2002
E-mail has continued to fill up my inbox, almost all of it filled with vitriol aimed at Fox, the show, and those who voted to keep Nikki there and remove Tamyra. There were a few to the contrary, and we have another sample of all of these here, including some important comments.

After I wrote the first article about viewer comments on Tamyra losing, I have continued to be inundated with e-mail. Below I provide another sample, along with some comments. I’m trying not to rehash points that have already been made:

Preston said:

There is something very very wrong with the voting system on American Idol. I have not been voting, nor have I had a favorite, but I have been watching. In my opinion, the fact that Tamyra Gray was eliminated tonight is utterly incredible!!! I have heard in the news that there has been mass multiple voting, "stuffing the ballot box." This should not be allowed, and there must be a technical way to prevent it.

The fact that multiple voting has occurred, nullifies, in my mind, the whole concept of the show. If there is an American Idol II, unless voting procedures are changes, I, for one, won't be watching.
While I agree with the sentiment, I need to point out something here. Preston begins by noting that he hasn’t been voting. As the saying goes (usually applied to political elections), “If you don’t vote, don’t bitch.” I don’t mean to pick on Preston, as he is not the only one who said something like this, but I think it needs to be said. If you don’t actually vote, you are allowing others to make the decision for you. And that may well be at least part of what happened here.

Fuzzr made a good point:

If Nikki indeed is benefiting from this auto-dialer scam, when the show is over, the hoopla is done and the public supports the contestants in their future endeavors, Tamyra's paychecks should tell the tale!
Indeed. Tamyra should go on to have a great future in the recording industry. Heck, looking on the good side, maybe she should get a head start now. You know, we learned that this week the four finalists recorded the single that will be released by the winner. It would be interesting if Simon and BMG would release all four versions. Let the public decide on the winner with their wallets rather than by dialing a toll-free number. I bet Nikki doesn’t beat Tamyra in that case.

Moving on, Troni had this to say:

I hope Kelly makes it, cause I just think now it's rigged. Shame on American Idol for making us think this would be a fair competition. Tamyra will go far. To hell with American Idol, she got the exposure now.
This is really what Fox and American Idol producers have given us – a reason to question the voting. Early on, a number of people asked why we weren’t shown vote totals. It seemed a little strange. Then when Christina was voted off, people wanted proof. Then with news of the powerdialers, Fox tried to blow it all off and say it was taken care of. Now, with this, people have completely lost any faith in Fox, the producers, or the voting system. It’s true that a little controversy is good for a show – that’s what Simon is there for. But this is not “a little” – and Fox could see their smash show drop like a rock if they don’t try to fix the problem, and fast.

In a similar vein, but with a different viewpoint, we have Ginger:

I was shocked when Tamyra was voted off. However I do not believe that the "fix" is in. Do you really think that the producers want Nikki to win? Anyone in their right mind would know that Tamyra could sell more CDs than Nikki.
This is quite true. And, no, I do not personally think there is a “fix” for Nikki to win – nor do most other people, I think. However, there is a difference between conspiracy and stupidity. If Fox is allowing the phone vote to be manipulated, I blame stupidity.

While most of the e-mails I’ve received have been critical of the vote to get rid of Tamyra over Nikki, not all of them were. In the interest of being even-handed, here I will present some of the “other side” of the coin. I would be remiss if I did not note, however, that the e-mails I am presenting here represent almost the entire sum total of comments that contradict the vast majority opinion that last night’s vote was shameful.
