Big Brother 3: Why Chiara Lostby David Bloomberg -- 08/23/2002
View Printable version of this article If you were to ask Chiara why she lost, she might tell you that it was all an evil conspiracy by the Big Brother 3 producers. Over the past week, she has blamed them for bringing back Amy without advance notice, for supposedly warning Amy about “Operation Revolving Door” and letting her know that she needed to win the HoH competition, and just about every other thing that has befallen her. After all, had she but known somebody might return, she might not have won the HoH contest the previous week. Riiiiiight. And you know, we never would have heard this complaining if, say, Eric had come back instead. But this isn’t an article about Chiara’s paranoid delusions. This is an article about why she really lost. So let’s take a look. Chiara was first a member of the Group of Six alliance and then the couples alliance that formed out of that. As such, she was in powerful groups who sought to control the outcome of the game in a direct fashion. Those not in these alliances obviously didn’t want to simply hand over control, and therefore set about to breaking them apart. Lisa and Eric went first, and then there was only one couple left. Yes, even a solid alliance of two is too strong when you start cutting down the numbers. But it goes beyond that. Chiara was, bluntly speaking, a bitch. She was outwardly nasty to Amy, and nasty behind the backs of just about everybody else. She even mistreated her own boyfriend in the house, Roddy. There are few worse combinations in reality TV than being a target because you are in an alliance and being a target because people simply don’t like you. And nobody liked her less than Amy. Chiara pushed Roddy to nominate Amy and Marcellas, thus ensuring that Amy would leave. Little did they know that she would be back. Amy may claim it was not revenge, but it sure looked like it. Perhaps not revenge for being booted, but definitely revenge for the way Chiara had treated her. But even without Amy, the Roddy/Chiara nomination had been agreed upon by just about everybody else ahead of time. The only difference was that everybody else wanted to see Roddy go because he is a huge threat. This, indeed, would have been the smarter thing to do. After all, who would you rather face in the final, well-liked Roddy or Chi-whore-a? It’s a no-brainer. Alas, it looks like many of the contestants have, well, no brains. For the second week in a row, the players voted with emotion instead of strategy. In this case, there is a little bit more to it than that, though. Amy was definitely being used by the other houseguests to put up the nominations they wanted, but she used them right back. She asked for promises that they would vote out Chiara – and the others gave in. Not that it took much arm-twisting, mind you. Lisa was still pissed that Chiara had voted against her earlier. Gerry’s vote is always up for sale (watch for an article on this coming soon). Marcellas gladly sided with Amy, especially after Roddy’s hot-tub flirting. Jason did whatever he was told. Only Danielle knew that Roddy was the bigger threat and had to be convinced by Amy that they would get rid of him next. Still, she voted against Roddy, perhaps because she promised Chiara that it wouldn’t be a unanimous vote and she already knew Chiara was going anyway. So when it comes right down to it, why did Chiara lose? She lost because she was caught in lies, was nasty to people, and was rather egotistical to boot. She thought she had it all figured out and had pulled the wool over everybody’s eyes. She was wrong. That is why Chiara lost.
