Big Brother 3, August 29: School's Out

by David Bloomberg -- 08/29/2002
In a not-terribly-shocking turn of events, the vote is unanimous. And once again, the houseguests have voted with something other than their brains. Will they ever learn? But there is a new HoH crowned, and it brings new interesting possibilities for next week. Read on…

We begin this eviction episode with Gerry talking about how it's tough to be the oldest. Somehow this segues into Marcellas saying (hopefully, but not necessarily, out of earshot of Gerry) that if they had voted according to the ugliest, Gerry would have gone the first week. Then back to Gerry talking to Roddy about how people tend to forget things that have happened previously - but Gerry doesn't forget; Gerry remembers. Roddy goes on to list a variety of the alliances that have come and gone. Girls coalition - gone. Guys coalition - gone. Hot tub people - gone. Couples - gone. Gerry & Marcellas - gone. Gerry & Marcellas? When the heck were they ever an alliance? I mean, Gerry saved Marcellas, but Marcellas has been an ungrateful bitch since then.

Anyway, Gerry says he really likes Roddy, but he doesn't trust him. Words to live by. If only Jason had heeded them as well earlier this week when he had the chance -- twice! Gerry goes on to tell Roddy that the perception in the house is that he is smarter than all the others. But, Gerry adds, you're not. Ouch!

Some of the other houseguests are already looking past this eviction and planning ahead. Marcellas notes that Danielle and Roddy are the lead players (well, duh). Then we get each talking about the other. Danielle says she doesn't hate Roddy, but he is a threat. Roddy says he would probably get along well with Danielle in any other situation, but he doesn't think she wants him here.

And then there's Julie Chen. She comes into the live part of the show and asks Roddy an inane question wondering, after having been on the block for two weeks in a row, is he surprised to not have been nominated this week? He says he feels like he's been paroled. Then she asks Roddy who he misses the most. Answer: Chiara. Ugh. And what about Lisa? Answer: Eric. Gosh, what surprising answers to great probing questions. Chen moves on to ask if anyone misses Josh. There is a general but not exactly enthusiastic "yeah." Next question: Who is missed the least? Josh.

We find out that the Map Room (also called the High Rent District or HRD) is about to be closed. So they will be back to one person sleeping on the army cot. Danielle says to bring it on, but the others indicate they are willing to consider sleeping there as well. Speaking of Danielle, Chen asks if she has anything to say back to husband Javier after having won America's Choice and having seen his tape last episode. She says that some things she can't say out loud, but she thanks him very much and America for voting for her. It was inspirational and she realizes people care for her.

The next segment is a family commentary. Jason's family and church have been watching him. His parents say he loves to sing and worship, he's a great guy and a good Christian - an example for young people to follow. When they first started watching the live feeds, it was very distressing. It was like sending your child off to college and being able to watch everything he did. They were a bit embarrassed to see him on TV in a Speedo. And while he enjoyed being with Chiara, they were less than thrilled about it. They politely describe her as unlike any other girl he has ever met. Yup, I'd be willing to bet on that one!

Interestingly, they - like so many others - wanted him to nominate Roddy and Amy rather than Gerry and Amy, but they said he thinks he needs Roddy strategically. He is definitely playing the game well, but they miss him.

And speaking of the main man Jason, Julie Chen now has him one-on-one in the HoH room. She asks why he went against Danielle's recommendation that he nominate Roddy. Jason says he came to trust Roddy as an ally and he gave his word to Roddy and Chiara that he would not nominate the survivor should he win HoH. Chen asks about the many times Roddy had supposedly looked out for him, and Jason rattles off several - all of which came from Roddy's mouth! In other words, Roddy convinced Jason that he was in danger, and then told him that he had taken care of it. Wow. I knew Roddy was a player, but this is really good. I'm impressed. And Jason is totally fooled.
