Big Brother 3, September 4: The Devil Gets His Due

by David Bloomberg -- 09/05/2002
Roddy has one chance left – if Amy wins power of veto, he can convince her to uphold her earlier promise to take him off the block. But will she succumb to his evil powers of persuasion? Or will the Devil finally get his due?

After recaps going back to Gerry’s eviction, we finally move to the nomination last episode and Marcellas’ now-infamous speech about Amy. After he left the room, the nominees, Amy and Roddy, were left alone and talking to each other. Amy asks Roddy why everybody has to be so cruel when they nominate her (mind you, she is asking this of one of the people who had nominated her early on!). Roddy says he feels bad for her, and that the speech was unnecessary and flat-out selfish and ridiculous to hurt somebody for no reason.

Marcellas, meanwhile, calls it the hugest intervention he could possibly do. Danielle tells him he should go talk to Amy and explain to her that he doesn’t like her actions but he loves her. She also asks him what he wants in terms of the eviction, and Marcellas says he does not want Amy to go – instead he wants her to make use of this opportunity.

As the two of them are outside talking, Roddy plops down and Marcellas tells him that everybody in the house felt the way Marcellas explained in his nomination speech (that he has surrounded himself with people who reflect poorly on him and he is untrustworthy). Roddy turns to Danielle and asks her if she feels the same way, and she says she does. He says she should have told him; she says she did. At this point, Marcellas tries to butt in and Roddy quickly shuts him down. Roddy says Danielle had said she trusted him 100%. Marcellas finally gets to talk and tells Roddy that the people around him have been doing bad things and it made him look like the master architect. Roddy denies it, saying Marcellas is the jackal and his perception sucks; Marcellas says that if he is wrong, he apologizes. Roddy sort of returns the half-apology and then gets upset when Marcellas walks away without acknowledging it with a hug or a pat on the head or something. Please. The Master Manipulator is just upset that he couldn’t get Marcellas to do what he wanted.

Marcellas tells the cameras that he felt like Mr. Smart White Man Roddy was trying to tell the poor dumb black folks what to do. Oh, give me a break. There was no hint of anything racial there and statements like this only make Marcellas look like a complete idiot.

Later, Danielle and Amy talk and just as Danielle had encouraged Marcellas to talk to Amy, she encourages Amy to talk to Marcellas. The two do talk to each other and he tells her he doesn’t want her to go. Both say they love each other and want them in each other’s lives forever, etc. Privately, Marcellas says that every time something like this happens, Amy has an epiphany, and you want to believe that she really does understand it. But… He says that when Amy is Amy, she is wonderful, amazing, etc. But then sometimes she is trying to be somebody else, like ex-beauty queen or whatnot.

Marcellas and Danielle get back together again to talk about Roddy and both agree that he is just too good with words (duh!). Marcellas reiterates that it was the will of the house, as if he is trying to convince himself more than anybody else.

As a break from the sniping over nominations, we see some clips of Roddy actually being fun. He is in the hot tub pretending to be a priest with holy water. He is being goofy at the dining room table. Etc. Marcellas says Roddy has become a lot more fun since Chiara left – she had a habit of taking him away from the others; Mom said he couldn’t come out and play. He says that strategically it’s smart to have some more fun with the others, but it’s too little, too late; if he had done this all the way through, people wouldn’t disbelieve him so much. Even Danielle notes that the Devil does have a goofy side.

OK, back to the sniping. Marcellas tells Roddy that everybody came to him and said that if they had gotten HoH, they would have put him up. Roddy shoots back noting that Marcellas had agreed he wouldn’t put Roddy up. Flash back to the hot tub with just the two of them in it. Marcellas says that deal wasn’t cemented for him. Huh? How, exactly, do you “cement” a deal more than making an agreement? Did they need to spit on their hands and shake on it? Draw a knife across their palms and exchange blood? Marcellas, just admit it – you went back on the deal because you saw it was in your best interests. Don’t pussy-foot around it and try to tap dance – you aren’t that good at it. Privately, Marcellas says he didn’t want people to think that he had a deal with Roddy. Hmmm. OK, well then maybe you shouldn’t have made the deal with Roddy to begin with!
