Bachelorettes in Alaska Break-Up: So Much for Reality TV Romanceby Susan Schechter -- 09/08/2002
View Printable version of this article I keep getting e-mails from fans of Bachelorettes in Alaska asking what happened to the girls and the guys that appeared on the show? Every e-mail I have gotten always asks the same question, "What happened to Sissie and Brent? When are they getting married?" Well, boys and girls, there is a nasty rumor going around reality TV Land. But it appears to be more than a rumor, it is truth, at least according to one former participant on the show. And I, as an incurable romantic, am heartbroken. I don't think I believe in "happily ever after" anymore. According to Rebekah, the bachelorette guys loved to date and viewers loved to hate, Sissie and Brent have broken up. She provided this information in an interview at RealityTVFans.com. Ugh! Now I have to confess, I got sick to my stomach when Mike Boogie from BB2 proposed to Krista during the show's final episode. I know a real proposal from a fake one - and his was definitely not real. I know real relationships from fake ones. But this one… this one with Sissie and Brent seemed to be the real thing. Happily ever after, the nice house, the white picket fence, the two children, and the Honda Odyssey. So what went wrong? How did this fairy tale end so poorly? No one is talking. My personal contact with some of the "rejected" bachelors and an e-mail to Fox have met with no answer. In the interview, Rebekah said that nobody has heard from Sissie. Of course, this is a private matter - as private as it can be after having their whole previous relationship on TV. The whole world saw their courtship, maybe now they need to have some time away from the cameras. So I am left to speculate. Relationships are hard. They take a lot of work, even if they are happily ever after. You can argue that anything worthwhile in life takes work, and relationships are one of the things that make life worthwhile. But let's face it, as a woman, I know I will never understand men. And I can't count how many times have men told me the same thing in reverse. The facts remain, Sissie and Brent obviously fell in love during the show. It was a no-brainer to anyone who watched the show that they were going to be the one couple who would live happily ever after. Maybe that is why they were the last couple shown to leave the icy glacier together - the audience knew that this couple would be together. But, to echo the words of Buffalo Springfield, "The Lights turned on and the curtain fell down" - the cameras turned off and perhaps this couple was left with just each other. I understand that they both met each other's families. Maybe they realized they were caught up in the moment of being on a TV show. Maybe they had nothing to say to each other when the cameras left. Who knows? Only Brent and Sissie do, and for now they are not talking. And I as an incurable romantic, feel heartbroken. I don't know if real romance exists anymore. First it was Alex and Amanda from The Bachelor breaking up. Now the one couple I thought would make it from reality TV didn't. Maybe you really cannot find love on reality TV. But I will keep being optimistic. Susan is still an incurable romantic. She can be reached as always at sschechter@earthlink.net.
