Big Brother 3, September 18: Setting Sail

by David Bloomberg -- 09/19/2002
Two houseguests leave for an ocean cruise (don’t worry – they get to come back), another chats online. Meanwhile, Jason and Danielle try to figure out just who should get the boot, as both Lisa and Amy use their charms on Jason.

As Danielle’s nomination speeches came to an end after last episode, there are hugs all around. Danielle says nomination is very stresslful, but she will do what she has to do to get to the final two and to win. But will she really? Does she really think she can win against Jason in the final two?

Anyway, Amy says it was the best nomination speech ever. Lisa has a strong feeling she’ll make it to the final two. Danielle says she gave the power over to Jason, who she is reminding to keep his eyes and ears open. Jason says it might be strategically smart to keep Amy because he doesn’t think the other 10 houseguests will give her the money. But he feels a connection to Lisa.

They all stare at the wall of houseguest photos for a while and talk about the accomplishment of making it to the final four. Lisa misses Eric. Amy is glad that certain people (insert shots of Chiara and Tonya here) are gone because she didn’t want them to make it this far. Danielle says she came in not giving a rat’s ass about these other people, but she has feelings for them now – they are her friends and roommates.

Later, Amy points out that there are two Southerners in the final four. Why is this important? Because they are having Southern BBQ for dinner tonight. Lisa has never had ribs before. Indeed, she has apparently never even seen ribs before, given the way she looks at Amy and Danielle as they eat. Danielle asks – and I agree – “What planet are you from?!”

When Jason and Danielle are alone, Jason says that his family will say meeting up with her was the best decision he ever made. He had planned to go in and look for somebody completely different from him to team up with – he was looking for an older woman who is probably a mom. He says his father told him to find a smart black woman. Danielle is obviously shocked by this revelation of his father’s planning – hey, it seems to have worked so far.

And why did it work? Because they kept their alliance secret! Danielle talks about how some houseguests would tell her stuff about Jason, others would tell Jason stuff about her, and then they’d secretly get together and compare notes. Jason says they purposely kept some votes close to stir things up and make it even less obvious that there was an alliance. Danielle says when necessary, she lied, she stabbed friends in the back. But she is loyal to only two people: Jason and herself. Jason notes that they both survived 10 weeks without being even nominated! If they can take this all the way to the end, it’s “un-stinkin’-believeable!”

In the morning, Jason and Danielle are up first, and then Lisa comes out of her room. Jason tells her she is so beautiful in the morning and it’s nice to see her first thing. Lisa is flattered, of course. Danielle says Lisa is not a sex kitten and doesn’t throw it all in your face (cue picture of Chiara). She notes that Jason may be a virgin and may be a Born-Again Christian, but he is still a man! Indeed, Jason says privately he would be lying if he said he was not attracted to Lisa – she’s beautiful. But it’s just innocent flirting – he says we’ve seen Eric, he could smash Jason’s head with his biceps. Still, if things don’t work out between the two of them…

But soon, Jason has his eyes on a different prize. It’s time for the luxury competition, which involves having to stand on a mechanical surfboard (kind of like a mechanical bull) for as long as possible. Each player gets two runs, and the two with the highest combined times get a sunset cruise in the Pacific! Amy is excited because this means a chance to leave the house and then return. Um, Amy, didn’t you already have that chance once before?

Lisa decides to throw the competition because she gets seasick. But the other three definitely want it. The final scores come in with Amy at two minutes, one second; Jason at one minute, 56 seconds; Danielle at one minute, 43 seconds; and Lisa at one minute, four seconds. Jason and Amy win!

Lisa says she will use her time alone in the house with Danielle to do some good in the game. But then, after Amy and Jason leave, the only things we see them doing are playing cards and doing impersonations of Amy (well, that’s Danielle doing the impersonations, not Lisa). At one point they talk briefly about the endgame and Lisa asks if she’s ever pissed off Danielle in the game. Danielle says no. OK, that’s about it.
