Big Brother 3: Why Amy Lost… Againby David Bloomberg -- 09/20/2002
View Printable version of this article Wow. Déjà vu. It feels like I already wrote a column about why Amy was evicted from the Big Brother 3 house. Ah, yes, here it is. But really, the reasons this time could hardly be more different than they were the first time. In the first article, I noted that “Amy managed to piss off just about everybody at one time or another.” But now, she was loved by all three of the remaining houseguests. Maybe it was that there were fewer people, maybe it was that she no longer had the negative influence of Marcellas. Who knows? But for whatever reason, she was not booted this time because of her behavior. So why was she booted? Why did Amy lose? To be honest, I cannot totally answer that question. Part of it certainly seems to be that Danielle and Jason had a pact with Lisa to go to the final three. But they also had one with Marcellas and they didn’t have a problem breaking it. If it had been fully up to Danielle, I suspect she would have booted Lisa, but while Danielle has some control over Jason, he is not her robot. He does not so easily break promises. And he goes with his gut, rather than his head, a bit more than Danielle does. Jason knew that he and Danielle had a better chance to beat Amy – both in the HoH competition and in the final vote if it were to come down to that. He knew it, but he didn’t act on it. Perhaps he thinks he has it made no matter what. Perhaps he just can’t think strategically when it comes to his friends. It was easy to boot Marcellas the previous week – he was so self-centered and had threatened Jason’s stay in the game. But when it came time to make the hard decision, maybe Jason just couldn’t get rid of Lisa. Maybe, maybe, maybe. That’s what we’ve got – a whole lotta maybe. Maybe he didn’t think Amy deserved it as much as Lisa. Maybe he found Lisa to be a better kisser. Maybe aliens kidnapped him while he was on the boat and replaced him with a replica. So this may well be the most unsatisfying article looking at why somebody lost. Strategically, it was not the right move for Jason to make. Morally, it probably was. So it would seem that she lost because Jason held to his “final three” promise with Lisa. But let’s face it, if she hadn’t lost now, she would have lost on either Saturday or Wednesday anyway. Perhaps then we should look at, overall, why she was in the position to lose sometime between now and Wednesday. The answer is that, frankly, she had lost once already. Those who stayed in the house didn’t want Miss Margaritaville to come back and win. Her behavior for several weeks – reverting back to the old Amy – wouldn’t have helped in that regard. Indeed, Amy was probably the only one Danielle could have beaten in the finals. In the end, Amy lost because Amy had already lost.
