Celebrity Boot Camp: Does Coolio Deserve an "A"?

by Phil Kural -- 10/02/2002
Coolio may have won Celebrity Boot Camp, but does that mean he deserved to win? He complained, threatened to leave, and even napped. Meanwhile, the others struggled in their own ways as well. If we were to grade each recruit, how would they do?

He complained from the beginning. From the second Recruit Coolio got off the bus and arrived at Boot Camp, it was quite clear that he was unhappy. He threatened to leave, whined about treatment, and was even caught taking a nap during "The Gauntlet." However, Recruit Coolio pulled through and won it all. How was this possible, and more importantly, did he deserve it? Let's take a look at each recruit and grade them on their time in boot camp. This is based on personal growth, as well as contribution when working as a team.

Recruit C - Recruit C tried so hard to prove she was capable of completing boot camp. She declared to the Drill Instructors from the beginning that she was scared of failing. Recruit C tried her hardest and even succeeded in conquering her fear of heights. However, it seemed that physically she just could not keep up. Try as she did, it just wasn't enough. Final Grade: C+

Recruit Ziering - Not only did Recruit Ziering look out of place in Boot Camp, she WAS out of place. Too pampered in her life, it was impossible for her to fit in. Recruit Ziering was so wrapped up in her personal life that she used her one-minute phone call home to check her voicemail instead of calling someone in her family to let them know that she was fine. She did not understand why she was there, and that is what made it impossible for her to adjust. Final Grade: D-

Recruit Williams - This was no lovely story about a man named Brady. Recruit Williams was harassed the most while check-in and inspection was taking place. Why did he bring a CD of himself singing? I have no clue. However, when it came down to working as a team member, Recruit Williams pulled his weight. What ended up holding him back was his lack of physical ability and fitness. The idea of Boot Camp is to realize your physical limits, and then push them further. Recruit Williams was not able to do this. Final Grade: C

Recruit Morvan - Was this guy even on the show? I forgot he was even there until he was getting dismissed. The reason for this is because although Recruit Morvan was in good physical shape, he did not attempt to grow as a person, or even try to strike up any conversations, as it appeared. It is hard to establish what he contributed to the group because he received so little airtime. Had he done anything worth mentioning at Boot Camp it would have been shown. Even the Drill Instructors said Recruit Morvan tried to go unnoticed and slide through the process without contributing. Physical ability is not always enough. Final Grade: C-

Recruit Kaelin - In the words of fellow RealityNewsOnline writer Susan Schechter: "Is this guy even a celebrity?" Oh Susan, who the heck knows? What I wonder is how Recruit Kaelin ever finished in the top eight. It simply baffles my mind. He was obviously the laziest person there (next to recruit Ziering) and was not much of a team player. Recruit Kaelin said several times that he was on the verge of quitting. I think even he was surprised that he was not one of the first two dismissed. I think Recruit C put much more effort in than Recruit Kaelin did. It is too bad that the Drill Instructors did not realize this. I thought they would be able to see past his exterior, and realize what a cry baby he was. He constantly complained about being bossed around and treated badly. He knew what he was signing up for, so I don't feel bad in the slightest. A dose of the real world is what he needed. Physically, he seemed to be up to par, but all his whining and nonsense was his downfall. Final Grade: F

Recruit Tiffany - Recruit Tiffany did much better than I thought she would. From the beginning, she looked like she was going to be chewed up and spit out. However, she finished in the Top 5. After her little rant about not wanting to call her son because she knew he would not understand why she only had a minute to call, I had to wonder. "Nine-year-olds are perfectly capable of understanding if someone says they are away and cannot talk long." I think she was looking for sympathy, but did not find it in me. Physically and when it came to teamwork, Recruit Tiffany pulled her weight. Although it must have been a little obvious that she was not going to make the final 4 when Recruit Coolio was asked who the last dismissal was going to be, and he said it would be Recruit Tiffany. She lasted a lot longer than I thought she would though. Final Grade: B-
