Surviving Thailand, Episode 4: Battle of the Sexes

by David Bloomberg -- 10/10/2002
The two tribes are supposed to be competing against each other, but instead, there is more fighting going on within Chuay Gahn as the men and women square off against each other in a quiet battle. The lines have been drawn, the sides chosen - or have they?

Sook Jai (SJ) returns from the previous episode's Tribal Council, not in great spirits. Shii Ann says it was not good to hear her name called out. Well then maybe you shouldn't have thrown the immunity challenge!

Robb says he was shocked at the outcome. Recall that he said he'd talked to the majority of the tribe members and they were going to vote out Shii Ann. It just goes to show you that nothing is set in stone, he says. Yeah, or you can't count up to five. Penny says she voted against Jed because most of the others were going to, and because he was trying to run the show and only wanted to do things his way. She says it was a good choice.

Day 10 dawns and Stephanie is mad about the vote. She says she was shocked and they shouldn't get rid of people who are helping you. Helping? I guess she has a different idea of what "helping" is.

Just as some dead squid had previously washed up on Chuay Gahn's (CG) beach a few days earlier, the same thing happens for SJ. Stephanie finds them and brings 'em home for breakfast. Then she goes and finds more and mutters about how the others must not be looking because they are right there. Others respond they are tending the fire. She asks if it takes five people to tend the fire. Shii Ann privately says she doesn't know what Stephanie's problem is - she acts like she thinks she is doing all the work, which is untrue. She acts like the others are all idiots, which is also untrue, says Shii Ann. I dunno, while I think Stephanie is being a bit of a witch, she may have a point about everybody being idiots.

But then Stephanie goes and talks to the biggest idiot, Robb, about how it doesn't take five people to start a fire, etc. Jed's spirit has apparently taken over Stephanie's body. Privately, Erin says with Stephanie's attitude, nobody wants her around. She needs to just suck it up and deal with it.

Over in CG, Jan says people are tired and on edge, the mood is more mellow since the Ghandia/Ted incident. Nobody has mentioned it since, but they are not as jovial. Ghandia says Ted is acting in a stupid manner - if he would let it go, things would be better, but he is creating an atmosphere where Ghandia is being ignored. Now, wait, let me get this straight - Ghandia is saying Ted should let it go? This is the same woman who talked to him about the incident, got his apology, accepted it, and then couldn't let it go at that.

Ted says he will not talk/look/whatever at Ghandia - he thought she was nice originally but when she tried to exploit the incident and damage his name, that was it. He only sees five people on the island, and hopes he never sees her again. Clay says he never liked Ghandia from the beginning - he saw trouble. He didn't feel sorry for her and he plans to vote her out. The three guys are hanging out, talking about the whole situation. Ted says if he'd been sleeping next to Clay, he'd probably have done the same grinding thing to him as he did to Ghandia! Now that would have made for some interesting videotape…

Later, Ghandia talks openly and rather sarcastically about how there is so much love in the cave.

For her part, Helen says she worked a rape crisis hotline and she believes Ghandia, not Ted. But the guys believe Ted, and that is because there is a conflict of understanding. Huh? She says that maybe Ghandia gave Ted the wrong impression, but that's no excuse for what happened. But then she says that the truth is probably somewhere in the middle.

The next day, still at CG, they get the biggest treemail ever - a note, a banana, and a big dummy. No, SJ didn't send Robb over - a real dummy. The note says the dummy is the newest member of the tribe, and they are to dress him up and give him a name, then bring the dummy to the reward challenge.

Both tribes debate whether it should be a male or female dummy. CG goes with female and all work together to paint her and dress her up nice. SJ goes with a male pirate theme, but pretty much only Stephanie does any work with it. Shii Ann first says the others (including herself) were just sitting back, but then says Stephanie didn't want any help.
