High School Reunion – The Casting Callby C. Brian Devinney -- 10/25/2002
View Printable version of this article From gowns and mortarboards to college to the first forays into the “real world,” ten years have passed since that fateful day you walked across the stage and received your high school diploma. If you’re like me, in the ten years that have passed since your high school graduation, you’ve probably only kept in touch with a handful of people from your senior class (if that many) and now your first high school reunion looms ahead of you (okay, my class reunion has come and gone already). Maybe you’ve taken out your high school yearbook and flipped through the pages wondering what has happened to members of your class since that fateful day you walked across the stage to be handed your diploma. What has happened to the captain of the cheerleading squad that you had a crush on? What about the class geek – has he gone from dud to stud? Was the class president really the most likely to succeed or is he just selling tires down at Auto Zone? From the creators of ABC’s The Bachelor comes High School Reunion, a reality show that will bring together members of one high school’s Class of 1993 at an exotic location to allow them time to reminisce, confront old demons, or possibly re-ignite an old flame. While in pre-production, the show was originally named Classmates and put out a casting call to through class reunion planners and the website Classmates.com. The first incarnation of the show under the new name took almost twenty members from the Class of 1992 to Hawaii and is set to air in early 2003 on the WB Network. The results, according to coordinating producer Kathryn Price (yes, the Kathryn Price from Mole 1) were better than expected, prompting the casting call for the second edition. “If a class wants serious consideration,” Price said, from her office in California, “they should not only sign up at the show’s website (out http://www.highschoolreunion.tv) but also provide as many other people to get in contact with as possible. The more people who show interest the better their chances of being selected.” For the first cast chosen to be on the show, producers hired private investigators and searchers to comb out every member from the Class of 1992 in order to interview them and give them the opportunity to be on the program. The same plan is in place for the school selected for the second season. So what are you waiting for? Would you rather have your reunion in a hotel ballroom or on a swank island? Either way, given my own experience, there will be some drama. But a lot of fun as well. C. Brian Devinney resides in New York City and works for an international commercial bank.
