ESPN's Beg, Borrow & Deal's Josh Gates is the unspoken leader of Team Cobi, and has brought "charm" to all whole new level. Despite the fact that Josh seems to be an open book, he shares some insights we never knew about himself, the show, and the women of Team Contact!
RealityNewsOnline: What made you try out for Beg, Borrow & Deal?
Josh Gates: The minute I heard about BB&D it was something I was really interested in trying. I like challenges and the prospect of trying to beg my way across America while talking my way into sports organizations really appealed to me! I know that sounds nuts, but it's one of those experiences that I wouldn't really be able to replicate in the real world, and therefore was too unique to pass up.
RNO: Now that you’ve done the show, what have learned about yourself?
Josh: I think that being on BB&D taught me that ANYTHING is possible. My teammates and I pulled off some real magic tricks on the show and all over the country, we managed to make things work in our favor by being clever, cooperative, and insightful. I learned that my knack for talking my way into things is really a lesson in what personal confidence can do for a person in a difficult situation. It was really empowering.
RNO: What surprised you the most about doing show and participating in the race?
Josh: I think I was most surprised at how caught up I got with the sports organizations that we visited. Not being a very adroit athlete and having only a cursory knowledge of sports, I thought that being in these stadiums wouldn't really hold much interest for me and I was really wrong. Spending time in the outfield at Camden Yards was a breathtaking experience and one which really got me excited about sports in a way that I didn't expect.
RNO: What have you learned about the kindness of strangers?
Josh: Not to crib Tenessee Williams too much, but as Blanche DuBois said, "I have always depended on the kindness of strangers." I've always felt that people are generally really kind and that hospitality is something that people in America are overflowing with. The people that we met along the way only served to illustrate that, by being so generous with me and my teammates.
RNO: You obviously could charm the spots off of a Dalmatian, where do you think this skill comes from?
Josh: Aw shucks. Stop it. Any skills I have in the charm department are garnered from my parents. My mother is charming and my father is hilarious. Hopefully I inherited a little of both traits.
RNO: It was definitely Spartan living for Team Cobi. Neil Mandt said doing the show has made him appreciate certain things more. What do you now appreciate more than before?
Josh: My car. :-)
RNO: Who’s hotter from Team Contact, Aubrey or Katie?
Josh: Aubrey. I think that Aubrey was the real brains of Team Contact and that her interpersonal difficulties with the team are a shame since she has a lot to offer that group. And at the end of the day, her smarts make her much more attractive than her teammates in my book.
RNO: What exactly is the deal with you and Juliet? There seemed to be some sparks!
Josh: That's one way to look at it! Juliet and I are both very strong-willed individuals and I think that our personalities came into contact with each other in a way that was, at times, charged. However, I think that most of the sparks between us weren't of the romantic variety. We're friends now that the show's over... just friends... ;-)
RNO: You said came from an athletic family, what did they think of the show?
Josh: My parents adore the show. I come from a very, VERY small town and everyone there has been so supportive. I think that in some ways, this show is a vindication for my father who always wanted me to be an athlete deep down inside. I think he's really proud of what me and the rest of Team Cobi have been able to pull off on the show.1 2 Next-->
