Survivor: Thailand – Unseen Footage on the CBS Websiteby Ken Kellam III -- 11/26/2002
View Printable version of this article Although there has been little fanfare about it, some of the video seen on the CBS Survivor website consists of footage not shown on TV. And some of it does shed a little more light on the goings-on at Koh Taratuo. In one very telling clip, Clay says he's voting for Jake only to secure a vote at final tribal council. He also says he's going to tell Penny of his vote, and that she'll know it's him because he'll put slashes on either side of the line at the top of the “J.” He says that's another thing he's doing that he can point to and say, “See, I did what I said I was going to do.” From there he says that Jake has the others not believing Penny is who she say she is. Clay makes it clear that when she gets four votes, she'll know he wasn't one of them. Is Clay playing the game better than he's been given credit for? Maybe so, but what happens if Penny talks to Jake in jury duty and tell him what Clay did? Will that cost him Jake's vote? And what happens if the other former Chuay Gahns who are eventually in the jury realize what Clay was up to? Will they think he played them all for fools? In another clip, Jake says Penny is playing well and operating very smoothly, and that she's blending in well with the others. He tells us she's doing it by not making any waves. Later on, he says that Helen has told him she likes Penny, but that Penny's a real threat. He also said he has taken a chance by talking to Clay and Ted, and Penny hasn't done any of that. Maybe not, but she has certain tried to brown-nose her way into their ranks. If Jake had been able to see confessionals by Ted and Clay, he might have second thoughts about Penny's smoothness. In a different clip, Jake says he hasn't done any plotting since “yesterday,” and hopefully, he'll win immunity “tonight.” Obviously, this confessional takes place on day 30, and Jake didn't wait until the last minute to do his scheming. In another unaired confessional, Helen says she and Brian have had a cool friendship since almost the beginning, with not a lot of words being needed between them. But when she saw how the game was played, it would've torn her up to do so, but if she and Jan had been in the finals of the reward challenge, taking Jan along would've been the sporting thing to do. She also informs us that Brian apologized to her for taking Clay and not her, but she's fine with it because that's how the game is played. She also reveals that she's sick and tired of Clay complaining about food. Next to Penny, she says, Clay is the tiniest person out there, but he acts like he needs 8,000 calories a day to survive, and the fact is, ALL of them are hungry. Previously, I thought Clay confined his negative comments to the camera. But apparently, Helen may be onto him. And more importantly, we now have a third person (Helen, along with Clay and Ted) who think they are in tight with Brian. In another clip, Ted, Helen, and Jan are heard discussing Jake's plotting. Apparently Jake told one them that Clay pulled him aside and said he plans on winning the game. Who doesn't? Helen says Jake also told her that Clay said he feels like he can win against Helen, Jan, or Ted, but not Brian, and that was supposed to turned them against Brian. Nice try, Jake, and you really had nothing to lose, it doesn't look like it's working. It will be interesting what else comes out in future unaired footage. It's also nice that Mark Burnett actually let us see footage that was neither redundant nor irrelevant to the state of things as they are. It’s just too bad this footage can only be found on the website and not on the show itself! But who knows – maybe it will air as part of Wednesday’s special episode.
