Joe Millionaire – Let the Lying Begin.by C. Brian Devinney -- 01/02/2003
View Printable version of this article He's hot. He hunky. He's tall, dark, and handsome. And yes, that is just his wallet in his pocket and he's still really glad to meet you. His real name is Evan, but we'll just call him Joe. For twenty (un?)lucky women, he's their ticket to the upper echelons of high society. Or is he? Twenty women were taken to a luxurious chateau in France having been told that they were meeting a man who had just inherited $50,000,000 (that would be fifty million, in case you got tired of counting all those zeroes) and is looking to settle down with the woman of his dreams. The settling down – well, that's for real. What's not for real is the cash. What the women don't know is that the $50,000,000 isn't real and his annual salary is just $19,000. It's a social experiment that will blow your mind – are they interested in him for who he is or do they just want all that cash? Welcome to Joe Millionaire – a cross between The Bachelor and Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire? produced by the creators of Temptation Island. As the audience, we're in on the surprise from the very beginning leading to the ultimate moment when he finally must reveal to the one woman of his choice the details of his true financial position. Will she still love him when she learns that he's really just a construction worker and that the entire thing has been one big charade? The promos alone give you pause as you look at each of the women fawn over the man of the hour. While one woman has a lavishly expensive necklace placed around her neck, she gives what appears to be a wink one of the other women. Is she just toying with that woman's emotions, gloating in her moment of glory, or thinking she's one step closer to getting the nonexistent $50 million. Our "millionaire" is really Evan Marriott. By his looks you would think this man would be making a killing as a model or even an actor instead of a construction worker. Well, he has been on the small screen once before. In a highly memorable scene from Days of Our Lives, he uttered the immortal line "Ma'am, where do you want this?" in his pivotal role of a furniture mover. All kidding aside though, Marriott has promised viewers that Joe Millionaire will prove to be one heavy roller coaster of a ride. As compelling as watching the women pursue the faux millionaire will be whether or not Evan can keep up the façade long enough to find his true love before the secret gets out. Joe Millionaire airs on Fox, Mondays at 9/8 Central, starting January 6. Let the fireworks begin. Be sure to sign up for our e-mail update so you can stay informed about new articles on the site!
