Fox’s ‘The Pulse’ Talks to Joe Millionaire and His Parents

by Peggy Keller -- 01/31/2003
Fox’s news program, The Pulse, promoted Fox’s own hit show, Joe Millionaire by interviewing Evan Marriott and his parents to find out what he’s really like. What does his mother think of the underwear ads? How do all of them feel about Evan lying to the women? And much more.

On Fox’s new faux news program, The Pulse, last night, Evan Marriott's parents, Charlotte and Hank, were interviewed and gave the scoop on Evan. Mom has no qualms about Evan lying to women about the fifty-million – on the contrary she is pleased the show finally enabled him to be discovered.

Some other facts about Evan that came from Mom and Dad and Evan himself include:

  • His wrestler alter ego was called Dark Suede.
  • Evan felt the underwear modeling gig was unfulfilling (enter your own filling joke here).
  • Charlotte is not only not embarrassed by the pocket rocket ads out there, but she says they are not like Victoria's Secrets ads, which do embarrass her.
  • Evan has liked to play in the dirt all his life, so the whole construction gig was a natural.
  • He struggled in school and on the football field where he was called “Ox” since he could not remember the plays and the other guys said he was as dumb as one.
  • He was fired as a Doorman from a NY Hotel for dating a guest and getting caught when he returned with her to the hotel on his night off.
  • He is a graduate of Hargrave Military academy, a pricey private school where he was sent because he has trouble staying on task in his regular school.
  • Mom does not feel sorry for the Gold Diggers on the show (as the show’s host calls them); she says it's not like they got parasites or broke a leg, that they had a chance to take advantage of the French culture (I think she is missing a huge point here). Dad does feel sorry for them.

Mom and Dad put to rest some of the more lurid rumors about Evan. They do not think he is gay or was a gay escort. They do not think he fathered several children up and down the East Coast. He does not have a tattoo on his back. As far as some saying he really is worth a million bucks, his father says it is a great rumor but not true, unless the money is in a Swiss bank account. (Or maybe under Mommy's name.)

The family is described as an upper middle class family from Virginia beach. Evan was in the church choir and a momma's boy but very close to his father too, he calls his dad the ultimate man for his strength and sensitivity.

Evan actually suffers from low self esteem around the chicks, he is the one not who gets picked up by women, but who often times is left at the bar acting quiet and hoping he does not open his mouth and make an ass out of himself. (Considering some of the things he’s said on the show – such as Melissa not being “domesticated,” I can see why he’d worry about that.)

Although his sister (his only sibling) calls Evan a real genuine guy, both his parents admit that Evan is not ready for marriage and Evan says he did find someone on the show with whom he shared a real chemistry, with but does not think anyone can fall in love after only five weeks.

Oh, and Evan does feel guilty about what he is doing, but he says the show must go on.

Nothing in this interview about what Evan and his parents think of Sarah’s roles in bondage movies, but the interview was likely done before those revelations and Fox probably wouldn’t want to promote that particular aspect anyway.
