Sorority Life 2, Episode 1: Will the Legacy Hold?Page 2View Printable version of this article Back to our show... the sorority hosts its first rush event, an ice cream social. That's where we meet Julia and Maggie, potential rushees and international business majors who are joined at the hip. Nicole shows up at the event in sweats, to the serious judgment of Mariah-Sarah-Janel, the social chair. Colleen, the rush chair, gives a big, teary speech about how all her sorority sisters are friends for life and will all be at her wedding. There's a fraternity guy somewhere running like hell right now, I can tell ya that. Then the sorority girls drop the bomb that not everyone will be given a bid. Outside in an interview, Nicole's a little upset by the announcement and says she's not sure what it meant, if it meant not everyone but legacies or everyone in general. The next day, it's a softball game with the rushees and all the gratuitous shots of sorority chicks bent over home plate. The rushees talk amongst themselves and Karissa says being in a sorority will help her with time management. She wants to be a doctor and study AIDS. Something about a doctor with time management issues bugs me, although it does explain why I have to sit for hours at the clinic. Rushee Amy is the catcher for the day and everyone seems to like her. Brooke makes the mistake of ignoring Janel and says she doesn't like kissing butts. And she wants to be in a sorority? Someone's been grossly misinformed here, obviously. At the end of the game, the girls announce that open rush is over and all other events will be invite-only. The rushees all go out drinking and handicap their chances. The sorority hosts a barbecue for the rushees and Nicole, apparently, has decided not to risk being dropped, even though she's a legacy. She admits she's in her sister's shadow but wants to show them the real Nicole. Rushee Amy is the topic of conversation for the sisters, and not just because she's sitting on the front row of the wrong house. There's a rumor that she was going to rush a different sorority but since MTV is here, she decided to rush DZO. Only ONE rushee has this issue? Somewhere in Davis, California, the Sigma sisters are slapping their foreheads. Then it's time for the big vote, to decide who will officially rush the sorority. After the first vote, the girls decide to individually discuss Amy, some girl named Rachel, Brooke, and Nicole. Talia says that the sorority needs to be selective and Amy can rush next semester (without cameras) if she wants. Rachel is pegged as being too shy and Brooke just generally gives one of the girls "bad vibes." They say she's one of those girls that relies on her looks to get her into places. Ouch. About Nicole, the girls say she's improved a lot and was more social at the barbecue, even though she whipped out her cell phone when it rang and started talking on it, annoying Rachel, the self-appointed etiquette chair. Despite their apparent shortcomings, the girls decide to keep Nicole and Brooke. Others making the cut are Melissa, Julia, Sarah, Maggie, Mackenzie, Erin, Brittany, and Karissa. So the cast is set. Let the backstabbing begin. Next week, the rushees go through personal interviews, where one is asked to stick her ass out the window and say the Greek alphabet backwards. Good God. Brooke's not having a good time either, saying it's 1:30 in the morning and everyone is mean. Jennifer Shrader is a fan of most reality television shows and is a newspaper reporter in the Deep South.
