Star Search, March 5: Round Two Beginsby Kathy Taylor -- 03/06/2003
View Printable version of this article Alright, folks. Something strange is happening. Tonight’s show didn’t seem that bad. Is it because:
I ruled out (3) immediately and decided that the correct answer is (2). Here is the scoop: The guest judge was Kathie Lee Gifford. Arsenio introduced her as a “legend.” Then again he called Ben Stein “dog.” Kathie Lee was very serene. And, to my surprise, there was not one mention of Cody and Cassidy. In the Category of Junior Singer: 10-year-old Ashley is home-schooled. She said she likes that because there are no kids to make fun of her. She has a strange appearance, like Wednesday Addams, so I can guess that is a valid concern. Kids are brutal. She sang “At Last.” Her voice was extremely powerful. 13-year-old Adrian sounded like he was going through puberty live and in person on national TV. He sang “My Girl” and didn’t seem to know the tune. Ashley advances with the following scores:
To the Young Dancers: “Extensions” is made up of three girls who do not have any extensions. It was modern dance/ballet/gymnastics at its best, very energetic. Wait! Here is where my note taking pays off: Kathie Lee loved their sisterhood. Do you think Regis is counting his blessings or what? Jordan & Tatiana were the competition. They were one of those dance teams that look like they left their ice skates at home. They were all right. You know, it’s like choosing between eggshell and off-white paint. Who really cares? But in the end, Jordan & Tatiana move on with these scores:
The comedians. I resisted getting on my computer for a quick game of solitaire during this segment. Neither of these guys was very funny. Jerry used an unnatural voice when he delivered his routine. Naomi said, “You’re chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry – I gave you 3 stars.” That red hair dye must be penetrating her scalp. Horace “HB” had a natural style and seemed to be at ease. Neither had strong material but the better performer won:
Adult singers to wrap it up: Both of these singers were very good. Jennifer, who is on her honeymoon, sang “It’s My Time” in her big country voice and actually got better as the song wore on. Altonet was an R&B type singer who chose a very difficult song in “A Long Walk” by Jill Scott. Let me tell you, I have tried this song many times and it is not an easy one to pull off. I thought she did it quite well. However, country ruled the day and Jennifer moved on:
