Survivor: The Amazon – An Interview with Jeanne

by David Bloomberg -- 03/21/2003
Jeanne thought she lucked out when the tribal swap occurred, but ended up getting voted out anyway. In our interview with her, she discusses what happened to end up with that vote, why they wanted to risk a tie, her plan for the game, and what she really thinks of Heidi, Jenna, and Shawna.

After Jeanne was voted off of Survivor: The Amazon, RealityNewsOnline had the opportunity to ask her some questions about her time there:

RealityNewsOnline: Hello, Jeanne. Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions from RealityNewsOnline.

How shocked were you that Heidi turned on you?

Jeanne: Not very... I had observed Heidi flirting with Dave that evening. I also saw her take a walk with Dave right after we decided to vote Butch off. I asked Christy if she felt comfortable with Heidi's commitment to vote off Butch and she said that we shook on it so it's an alliance. On the way to tribal council I noticed Heidi was fidgity and wouldn't look at me so I felt like I was going to get the knife in the back.

RNO: Before JoAnna was voted off, did you have any idea that Heidi, Jenna, Shawna, and Deena had an alliance?

Jeanne: Only a few hours before tribal council Shawna talked to me and asked me to vote her off. I asked her if she secured any other votes and she said she was struggling with her alliance. I asked her if I had anything to worry about and she said no but JoAnna was next. Shawna indicated that she felt comfortable that her alliance would vote her off which is why JoAnna and I voted for her.

RNO: Were you approached by any of the guys on New Tambaqui to form an alliance, or did they only approach Heidi about it?

Jeanne: The guys did not approach me at Tambaqui. I briefly talked to Butch and asked him how he felt about tribal council but he said he was too upset to talk about it and basically blew me off.

RNO: For that matter, did you approach any of them, or did you just decide it would be best to take your chances with a tiebreaker?

Jeanne: I thought that I had a chance if I talked to Butch and Roger and started an "older alliance" but never felt comfortable talking to them. Roger was very bossy and if he had been approached by me to form an alliance I think he would have been insulted. I felt the tiebreaker was the only way to advance the women.

RNO: Did you know what form the tiebreaker would take ahead of time (for example, the "purple rock of death" that spelled the end for Paschal) and did this play into your decision?

Jeanne: We were not positive what form the tiebreaker would be but assumed it would be big straw little straw. Christy and I felt it was the only way to move the women ahead and decided to take that chance.

RNO: We saw Heidi and Jenna make numerous comments privately about how cute and beautiful they are – were they as open with their arrogance in camp as well, or did you not know about what they thought of themselves and you until you saw it on TV?

Jeanne: Actually, I knew that they wanted to flirt and use their so called good looks and body to get them ahead but I didn't know that they were talking so badly about "the older" women. I was really shocked that they were talking behind my back while I was working really hard trying to provide food for them.

RNO: Did it bother you that Christy said in front of you and Heidi – at least twice – that the men made a much better effort to communicate with her than the women did?

Jeanne: No because they did do a better job making sure Christy felt comfortable. But, as you recall it was day 14 and the shelter was built and there was somewhat a comfort level knowing you have a shelter, food, and fire. You must understand that the first few days were hard for everyone at Jaburu and most of the women didn't intentionally make her feel unwelcome. Christy also could have made a better effort trying to fit in at camp.

RNO: If you knew you couldn't lie and backstab, what was your plan in approaching Survivor, which generally features quite a bit of both?

Jeanne: There have been past seasons of Survivor where the winner made it through the entire game without the backstabbing approach and never jeopardized their integrity. I planned on working extremely hard, being nurturing and laying low.

RNO: Given that you said you wouldn't lie and backstab, how do you describe your accusation that Janet had the granola bar and trying to set up Deena to take the fall by making her leader and hoping she'd rub people the wrong way?

Jeanne: I definitely saw the granola bar fall out of the lining of Janet's bag. I knew it was Janet's bag because her Teddy was sticking out of the top. I saw it the day before I acknowledged it to my tribe because I wanted answers first. I had asked the producers when I had one of my interviews why they gave the bar to Janet.... was it because she was so sick? They told me that they didn't give it to her. We were going to our reward challenge so decided to hold off on telling everyone. When we returned the bar was on the bottom of our box and I said to Joanna it was originally in the lining of Janet's bag. We just asked for someone to confess and never got an answer. I did not vote Janet off because of the bar but because she was the weakest. I know Janet now and am positive she didn't sneak the granola bar on the island.

I elected Deena to be the leader because not only didn't I think she could take orders from Joanna or myself but if I had became the leader she would have given me a hard time. We had enough drama going on in our camp and I wanted to lay low.

RNO: What do you really think of Heidi, Jenna, and Shawna, now that you not only lived with them but also saw what they had to say privately?

Jeanne: I think they are very immature and hopefully the Amazon experience will help them reprioritize their lives. Shawna was very nice to me in the tribe and I don't think she plans on using her body and looks to get her ahead in life. As for Heidi and Jenna, I hope they get the offer from Playboy. That would make them happy and perhaps if they were happy they wouldn't be so vindictive.
