Catching Up on the Osbournesby Dale Sherman -- 05/08/2003
View Printable version of this article Well, it's been a couple of months since The Osbournes finished its second season and there certainly has been some news to catch up on. In fact, a lot of the tidbits have been so dramatic that it is a wonder if perhaps the cameras were not still rolling on the family even though filming was completed for the third season in early April. Probably the biggest recent news is that of Jack Osbourne this past week going into rehab for alcohol and marihuana abuse. As one would expect, some of the response in the media was flip about the news (one article had the title "Jack's Sabbath"), but many were sympathetic to the teen and his admission of a problem. Evidently, Jack felt his problems were getting out of control and had gone to Sharon for advice on what to do, leading to his decision to go into rehab. There remains a question as to how this will affect Jack's rumored talk show that he was supposed to film a pilot of in April for Channel 4 in England. There has been little word about the show since it was first announced in the press back in March, so one does have to wonder if the two items are related in some way to each other. Either way, I'm sure that fans wish him the best at this point in time. With the mention of Jack, we must now turn to the other child of the series, Kelly Osbourne. Although her album never really took off - thanks to a mix of people thinking it was just pandering to the television fans and those who are not interested in female singers doing anything beyond the Spears/Aguilera level of pap - Kelly continues on her quest in music by making more public appearances in the past few months. Unfortunately, there also appears to be frequent call-offs and last-minute cancellations occurring, so it is hard to say how seriously she is taking the whole thing. Speaking of Aguilera, rumors abound that Kelly and Aguilera got into some type of fistfight at a party back in March. Depending on what side of the fence the person telling the story is, it either ended up with Aguilera punching Kelly in the face and making her cry, or Kelly thinking Aguilera was nuts and simply walking away. Since there was never any actual news coverage of the event in question, it is safe to say that probably nothing at all happened besides some type of vocal confrontation. Kelly has gone on record to Heat magazine about the event, saying that there was a confrontation at a party, but that Aguilera's comments that there was a fistfight were untrue, stating that Aguilera is "a (bleep)-ing feather. I could pick her up and chuck her across the room." So the ending of this story still seems to be in the future. Since we're on the subject of public fistfights, it must be mentioned that Sharon was in the news in April for having a dustup with her arch-nemesis Renee Tab over the diamond necklace Sharon wants back from Tab. As some of you may remember from the last episode of the second season, the Osbournes had a raffle at their New Year's Eve/Wedding Party, where the winner received a diamond necklace. Tab was the winner of the necklace, but Sharon objected later as Tab was not an invited guest. Tab insists that she was and has so far refused to return the necklace to the family. (For those interested, Tab can be seen at the end of the final episode thanking the family for the necklace, while not being able to remember most of their names.) There has been a series of bitter accusations between Tab and Sharon ever since. The latest row occurred when the two found themselves in the same Los Angeles restaurant. Sharon reportedly went up to Tab's table, cursing at her and spitting on her. Tab's reaction, reportedly, was to clock Sharon in the jaw, causing a bruise and a run to the hospital by Sharon to make sure that her jaw was not broken. Considering Sharon had just come off of treatment for cancer, it probably was not the smartest moment for either woman. Both have filed assault charges against the other, and nothing further has been mentioned publicly about the situation since mid-April from the city, although both Tab and Sharon have continued to harp about it in public. On the bright side for Sharon and the family, it was announced in very early April that Sharon has beaten her current bout with cancer. This occurred just as the filming for the third season of the series was ending, so no doubt it will be covered on the show. It was good news for the family, who always seems to have another crisis coming their way these days. Ozzy himself seems to be the quietest of the Osbounes right now, simply spending his time getting ready for a tour of Canada in June. Beyond that, there has been some talk about turning Ozzy's life story into a theatrical film, but that's mainly talk for the moment. With the bombing of the reality-based MTV movie The Real Cancun, most talks about bringing other reality-based MTV shows to the big screen are probably being reconsidered. Even if it doesn't occur, fans still have the third season of the series to catch up on when the show returns in the second week of June. I'll be back at that time to recap the new season as well.
