Sorority Life 2, The Finale: This Is the End... of James Taylor's Sanity

by Jen Shrader -- 05/31/2003
Well, the second season of Sorority Life is drawing to a close and some of our questions get answered. Like, does Brooke come to her senses and depledge again? Is Brittany ghetto? Can planes fly in the snow? And most importantly, do these girls ever get initiated?

Previously, Brooke depledges, then decides to come back, flaming the nostrils of Maggie and MacKenzie.

This week: Brooke and Nicole are in the pledge house hot tub, speculating about when initiation might come. Nicole says it's annoying that they know it's this close and don't know the date. Brooke just whines that she wants her life back.

Daytime at the pledge house and the pledges are getting ready for Janel's "event." They're supposed to go to a football game but Janel cancels because it's raining. Instead, the pledges have to make her lunch. She smiles a smug smile when she interviews this. I want to slap her. So do the pledges.

Janel says pledging is like anything, the rookies have to be "shown the way" and "earn their stripes." I bet she misses the hazing days.

Julia whips up some Spanish rice and chicken and Princess Janel is happy. Except there's not enough for everyone and Brooke has to forage through the cabinets for her lunch. Poor Brooke.

Brooke later whines on the phone to her friends that she just wants pledging to be over. We get it Brooke.

It's snowing in Buffalo but our girls are headed to New Orleans for a random trip. One of the "rules" is all 22 girls have to stay together but Brooke and Nicole, who are even dressed alike, manage to separate themselves. Pledge Melissa says the group is down there together and they should do things together and stay together because that's what the sorority does together. She says “together” about 80 times all together.

Brooke correctly says that having all 22 people "together" makes everything a process. But that doesn't stop them all from going on a swamp tour together and walking down Bourbon Street together. Sister Amy gets beads. Thankfully, we' re spared from seeing what she had to do to get the beads.

And now it's time for the great "second bed" scandal. I'll summarize because it's just too stupid to fully recap.

Melissa, Brooke and Nicole are sharing a room. There's two beds: A big king bed and a smaller single bed. Brooke and Nicole jump in the big bed, and Brooke says "Spoon me."

Where's Tim when there could finally be some girl on girl action?

Alas, the only action is a fight. Melissa doesn't want to sleep by herself and goes in the other room. But like all good "sisters" she talks about it once she gets there.

Brooke overhears the talking and goes to talk to Melissa. Then the action moves to the hall where Brittany threatens Nicole. This upsets Brooke even more. Then Courtney's in the hall and everyone agrees to go to bed. Then Brooke confronts Brittany about threatening Nicole and Brittany gets all upset and goes downstairs to avoid getting into a fight. Cause she's "Scrappy."

And the next morning, everyone goes back to Buffalo. That was great, huh?

Nicole and MacKenzie go to dinner at Applebee's, the great DZO hangout. MacKenzie says she's seen Brooke open up a lot and doesn't believe Nicole and Brooke are isolating themselves. MacKenzie says Melissa was upset about the bed incident and took it as "Nicole and Brooke don't want me."

Brooke and Melissa have their own talk. Brooke says she's glad Melissa said something to her rather than talk about her behind her back and their fences are mended. Even Brittany and Brooke get over their fight.

Just in time for scrapbooking! The pledges make a scrapbook of all their times together. Precious. I smell puffy paint coming.

Then it's Big/Little night and the pledges go to dinner with their big sisters. Brooke says she likes Laura and Stacey because they've reassured her that some of the pledging is stupid but in the end the sisters will be there for her.

Then the sisters are blindfolded and told they're being kidnapped. They're driven around a while before they arrive at the DZO house. MacKenzie says she thinks she's at a fraternity house and is going to be forced to do something weird with a strange guy. MacKenzie gone wild!

But it's not that, it's initiation! Which we only get to see the end of! Everyone's holding a candle and the sisters are singing "You've got a friend" to the pledges. Badly.

Nicole says it's good to know she's accepted by the sisters since they didn't like her at the beginning. Maggie says she even gets along with Brooke now. And MacKenzie says all these people are a part of her life and she's had the best time ever.

And somewhere, James Taylor is crying.

Jennifer Shrader traded in her boyfriend for a dog, who is always happy to see her, is properly housetrained, and doesn't drink all her liquor while she's taking a nap. She and her dog live in the Deep South, where she's a reporter for a community newspaper.
