Boarding House: North Shore – A Previewby Paris Cosby -- 06/17/2003
View Printable version of this article There is a new reality show coming to The WB titled Boarding House: North Shore. It features seven professional surfers living together in a gorgeous beach house on the North Shore of Oahu. They are there competing against each other to win the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. From viewing the trailers found on their website, it looks like they'll be vying for a lot more than the Triple Crown. I don't think I've ever seen so many people smack each other in such a short amount of time. This is going to be an interesting, and seemingly violent, show! The seven surfers (four men and three women) are Sunny Garcia, a 32-year-old who has placed in the top 10 internationally for the last 13 years; Myles Padaca, a 10-year veteran and winner of last season's Vans Triple Crown; Damien Hobgood, a former Rookie of the Year and identical twin of C.J. (they should make more twins like that!); Danny Fuller, a 21-year-old pro who looks to be the resident 'bad boy'; Holly Beck, President of International Women's Surfing and currently ranked 8th in the world; Veronica Kay, the international face of Roxy Surfwear and an avid snowboarder as well as professional surfer; and, Australian, Chelsea Georgeson, currently ranked 5th in the surfing world. Apparently, there is some tension between two of the girls. Holly and Veronica have some sort of rocky past that seems to come out in the series. Between that and all the bikinis, the male viewing audience should be fairly attentive. But female viewers won’t be left out with four absolutely amazingly gorgeous men to look at (don't forget, one is a twin!). The Vans Triple Crown is made up of three separate surfing competitions – Haleiwa, The Rip Curl Cup, and Xbox Pipeline Masters. Each of these are individual events in which the surfers are awarded points for their placements (as well as a cash prize). First place receives 1000 points, second place receives 860 points and third place receives 730 points. The surfer with the highest total score will be awarded the title of Vans Triple Crown Surfing Champion. There will also be a lot more competitors than the seven surfers we'll see living together on Boarding House. While they are some of the best surfers in the world, that doesn't guarantee that one of them will win the championship. Also, the men's and women's competitions are separate. This will be the 21st year of the Vans Triple Crown for men whereas the women have only been competing in the championship since 1997. It would be nice to see one of these three women win it this year. As for the technical part of the show, Boarding House is produced by Mark Burnett Productions, the same production company that brought us the reality show, Survivor. It will begin airing on The WB this Wednesday, June 18, at 8 p.m. EST. The show will be rerun Sunday evenings at 9 p.m. EST beginning on June 22. The series will consist of six one-hour episodes and will follow the surfers through their days of competition and their nights of partying in an attempt to show or dispel the stereotypical surfer's lifestyle. Even though it won't be a very long-running show, it should be a good one! I'm looking forward to Wednesday night! Paris Cosby is a Canadian mother of three.
